I just bought a Heater Buddy portable propane heater for my boat to help take the edge off these crisp fall nights. I plan to run it while awake in the cabin and then stow it in the cockpit while sleeping. It has a built in low oxygen shutoff but I would also like to add a separate CO detector which I have been meaning to install anyhow.

Can anyone recommend a good detector based on actual experience? Please no opinions, I want actual experience with a particular device. Cost is not important.

I have been using a CO experts detector for several years and am very satisfied with it. It is very sensitive and will start giving a warning beep long before a dangerous level is reached. It also has a digital read out. It has given me warnings several times from my stove and from neighboring boats running their engines at the dock and I was able to take appropriate action long before there was any danger.

We have a Kidde

We have a Kidde Nighthawk CO Detector. Unfortunately I can't tell you how it works. As you know we have a diesel engine and they give off very little CO.

We no longer use the Force Ten Cabin heater so the only other thing that could set it off would be the oven and it has not. I do put in a new battery each spring and test it but other than that I have to assume it's working??

This is a home unit and it shows no signs of any corrosion of the PC board or electronics. It was fairly inexpensive and the Kidde Nighthawks get good reviews in Consumer Reports..

CO Detectors

I currently have THREE Kidde CO detectors in my home, One is portable with ppm noted on the face. I take this to the boat during sailing season and with me when checking in at Motels. The other two are Kidde Nighthawk models,
plug-in with digital display. They saved my life two weeks ago when the portable model, upstairs on the second floor alarmed at 380 ppm at the time I was going to bed. The other plug-in was in the basement near the furnace and registered 100ppm. Problem was a squirrel built a nest in my flue and I had the heat turned on for the first time.
The third Kidde model was purchased the next day so I could have a monitor with visual display in the entertainment section of the first floor. I wouldn't be writing this today if it weren't for my Kidde CO detectors.

Hi Tim -- I have been using a Fireboy/Xintex detector that is hard wired to my house bank and comes on automatically when the house bank is switched on. It has worked well for 2 years with no annoying false alarms.

I second Maine Sail as we also have a Kidde Nighthawk with a digital readout. It has alarmed once due to heavy battery charging while we were on the hard. This is a known issue with CO detectors ( I presume all CO detectors, but I do not know for sure).

They also alarm on a variety of household products, so during times of intensive cleaning you may get alarms. I have only had it alarm on battery charging. The booklet with the unit does not have a complete listing of all chemicals that will cause an alarm, but the website and/or customer support does have a list that you can get.

I would recommend it highly and I have additional ones in my home.
