Club Boat Problems?

I'm thinking of buying an S2 7.3 that has been extensively used by severaldifferent owners within a sailing club in New Jersey. What issues should I look for? The boat has wintered on the hard and moored on a bouy in season. The sails were professionally gone over last year. I want to know what to look for when I look at her. What are some common problems with S2s? Keel? Rigging? Rudder? Crazing? I'm planning to buy the boat without a survey, so please don't recommend I get a survey. Cheers, Brian

Not a good idea to buy a boat without a survey...

a survey isn't expensive...it's money well spent.

Brian, I have no idea how much the sellers

ae asking but by the time you get this back to Missouri you will add a couple of thousand to the purchase price. I should think that you could find a very nice boat for this asking price plus 2 grand in you own neighborhood.

Consider Three Separate Surveys

I have found that a single surveyor often is not experienced in all of the three main aspects to sailboats - being engine/mechanical, hull and sails/rigging. I will come in for some flak from others but I would get three separate surveys and not rely on statements like 'the sails were.....'. Hull surveyors often have no clue about compression tests on engines. Just had a full rigging inspection/report for $159 Cdn.

Peolpe Please

OK, let's try this for those who gave the above suggestions. Please DO NOT send me a check for $20,000. Definately don't send me three checks for $20,000. Thank you.

Try a book

"Buying an Aging Sailboat" or something to that effect. Don't get a survey, look at all the stuff you mentioned and then look in a mirror and wish yourself the best of luck. Uh, also, how about the motor? Advice proffered has great merit. Your boat, your choice.

Brian, I recommend you get a.....

Good set of tools and some extra space in your yard so you can work on it. Club boats and charter boats alike are "rental cars" and are treated that way. If this is not your first boat then do the usual things experienced boat owners do when buying a boat. If you dont know what those are... well... best of luck. I googled the S2. Kind of a cool little boat. Cheers Rick

You didn't mention what they are asking for the boat. A buddy of mine has an S2 7.3 for sale in Oshkosh, WI it's a hell of a lot closer and I know he kept his boat in tip top shape. right now he's been trying to sell it for over a year, he'd probably let it go for a reasonable price. I'll get his number and email it to you if you're interested. Dave

I will agree with Dave/makingthyme the S2 in Oshkosh is in great shape. Larry the owner is a carpenter by trade and has really taken great care of this boat! There are some build ins , not ever seen in other boats of this size. Goods trailer, it will travel to MS. Rob Hessenius
