Closing Companionway in Heavy Weather

When, if ever would you close up your compaionway and hatch? Heavy wind, heavy seas? or never. I am new to a boat that could flood into the cabin. I was sailing in heavy winds with my 326, and began to wonder if I should close the compaionway and hatch in case of an accidental knock down. (yes I was reefed and all that) but was heeling to 40 degrees and wondered if a stray wave hit us abeam what would happen if we got a knockdown. Any input on this subject would be appreciated. Ed

Always close the companionway hatch when rough.

Ed: We always close the companionway hatch when it gets very rough. I really don't want a water down below even though it is not going to sink the boat. If you have large breaking waves (especially if they are on the beam, aft quarters or stern) it would be prudent to put the boards in the companionway. My advice is that if it something you think may be a good idea, you should just do it. You are the Capt. and you are in charge.

STEVE HAS THE RIGHT IDEA...

Ed, closing all hatches and through hulls is cheap insurance in rough weather, including the companionway. Chances are your boat will right itself once the wave passes, but during that time you could have a lot of water sloshing around in the cockpit until it drains out. Terry

Definitely batten down the hatches, Mate!

We only have an H23, and we rarely take her out of the Barnegat Bay, but whenever the spray starts blowing over the bow, the hatches get closed and fastened - just in case! If nothing else, the cabin stays dry that way. If things start to get hairy, we plug up the solar vent forward, and cover up the rear companionway hatch vents. Like the man said... better safe than sorry! Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass Ett

Latch yourself in too

Heavy weather and 40 degrees of heel, I'd also have myself attached to the helm via harness and tether. A closed hatch to protect water from coming in from a knockdown or being pooped by a wave wont do you any good if you're overboard floating away from your boat!
