Forgot to open 1986 Hunter 28.5 seacock. Engine sounds funky. Is the problem most likely the impeller?

yup.. shouldn't make funny sounds though.. might be pump drive belt tension .. did the engine severely overheat?
If you stopped it when the alarm horn sounded, impeller may be the only thing you change.. The heat from in-cooled exhaust may have melted or loosened the exhaust hose and changed the sound you hear..

It's hard to tell by 'long- distance' from that description what the sound might indicate.

Clearly, the first thing to check is the impeller.

If you ran it with a dry water pump impeller is toast, but that's not going to make it sound any different. kloudie1 diagnosis is the next most logical.

Depending on how hot the engine got you may need to replace the impeller but definitely you will need to inspect it. Engine oil tends to quiet down moving parts in the engine and heat is the most significant enemy of oil viscosity so after the engine has overheated the oil will loose viscosity and the ability to deaden sound besides loosing lubricating properties. After every significant overheat the engine oil should be replaced. The noise most usually comes in as a chatter from the valve train but the noise from all moving parts will increase as well. Cannot experience what you describe as funky so this is one option but do change the oil.

Tip: Store your engine key on the seacock valve handle. Even then listen for the exhaust burp after starting.

That is a good suggestion. I do not regularly shut the seacock but when I do I hang the key chain from the handle. The reason that I do not shut the seacock is to avoid having to go down to open the valve and retrieve the key; I opt for frequent inspections of the thru-hull, valve, hose and clamps.
