Closed loop Halyard/ Gerr Downhaul

I want to run my foresail halyard aft to the cockpit and I'm considering combining a closed loop Halyard/Downhaul system with the Gerr Downhaul (Jib lazyjack) on a single line. I'm thinking that to lower the Jib/Genoa, I could start by pulling on the Gerr downhaul side and bunch the sail somewhat on the forestay, then release the halyard-side clutch and continue to pull the downhaul and ball it (sort of) on the bow. I realize the downside will be a lot of line and blocks (friction) and that hanking on the foresail will take a little longer rigging the Gerr downhaul setup. Has anyone tried this, seen it, or have any caveats, recommendations, etc?

I'd keep 'em separate

If I understand it: a single loop which is both the halyard and the downhaul? I'd keep them as two systems. If nothing else, you need MUCH stronger lines for the halyard than the downhaul. Matter of fact, you can get away with a pretty meager downhaul line. Also, with a Gerr (as opposed to traditional) downhaul, friction becomes an issue, and you want to minimize it anyway you can (such as using light line; passing them through an oversize block at the base of the headstay; not passing through all the hanks; etc.) When you have the Gerr working, downhauling will bundle up your headsail into a lump on the foredeck. Tightening the sheets will keep it a centered lump that won't go over the side. I don't think you're going to need to partially douse the sail (by leaving the halyard tight when you begin downhauling) as an initial step. Dousing is more likely to be a separate option for you, if and when you want to completely depower the headsail in a strong blow. Running your halyards back to the cockpit will change your life! Changed mine, anyway - I single hand a lot.

I agree

Keep them separate. I recommend leading the downhaul line like a furling line, led down the stanchions to the cockpit. Call me if you're interested in talking more about it. Dave Groshong Customer Service SailboatOwners.com Toll Free 877-932-7245 ext.116, Mon-Fri, 9-5 Pacific
