This is the West Coast we don't pack it in.

What do you mean pack it in. This is the West Coast baby. There are still a lot of good sailing days ahead. Even if it is raining, just work on upgrades below. When the sun comes out, unwrap the sails and fire up the iron lung. Some of the best days are in the winter.

We are still in the water till Oct. 20, up here in Sarnia Ontario Canada we have to lift the boat before Nov. 15. Some of the real boaters will leave the boats in and bubble. I will drain all tanks, and fill with red pop. The deisel will be toped off. After getting out of the water we connect a hose into a jug of red pop and start the motor up till she runs red out the exhaust. Then we will get the shrink done over the boat by the Marnia, I will come and work on the boat over the winter when it is not to cold.

Labor Day Weekend

Had to haul out Labor Day Weekend this year, but normally we get out the first week in October because wind speed and direction at my mooring location can get nasty. Lost a chafe guard on a dock line once, and had a 5/8 inch dock line chafe through in about four hours time. My boat stays in Michigan, but I winter in Virginia and sail with friends on Chesapeake Bay until late in the year. The nice thing about being in Virginia is that its a lot shorter trip to the Annapolis Boat Show than it was from Michigan!

Week of October usually does it for us. There's still a lot of good weather in Oct or even early Dec, Maybe it's just part of the aging process, but a haulout on a sunny & 60's day beats freezing rain/snow, etc to haul and cover any time...been there....done that. Been thinking about bubbling, though. That could extend the fall and get an early start on spring.

Shades

December 15 I replace sunglasses with ski goggles and a balacava. And dig out the bubbler, in case it comes to that. One year I had signifigant hull damage due to a poor marina blocking job and a heavy, wet snow. The water seems a gentler cradle.

water level

Our pullout is usually the first or second week of October, depanding on weather and water level. We have dams that influence the height of Kootenay Lake, so if we wait too long, cannot get boat on trailer until water level comes up again, which might be December and just a little chilly. if we leave boat in water, would be resting on keel in early spring. We usually have about a month to winterize without worrying about freezing.

Winterization

I am interested in opinions about whether to take the sails (main, Genoa) out of the boat (MacGregor 26M, mast lowered) when it is shrink-wrapped for winter or is it ok to leave them in it.

Winter? What winter?

We're getting close to the middle of October and still having 80 degree days and warm nights. We had to go swimming yesterday to cool off. If the lake level wasn't dropping, I would think about sailing until Christmas!

10/19

is my haul date. Ran in to rudder problems a few weeks ago, so I can only use it as a floating bar right now. I guess it is a good thing though, as I have actually been checking off a lot of the stuff of the pre-haul checklist =)
