Nov 1

That's the deadline for pulling boats out in our town marina. So, on Nov 1, expect me to be sailing 4 hours or so to her winter quarters, where she'll be pulled out and shrinkwrapped. Incidentally: yesterday was amazing sailing in my part of Long Island Sound. What a great time of year for sailing.

Haul out time

Around Mass bay haul outs start around now last week in sept and usually things are pretty much wrapped up by 10/15. Some die hards stay in thru 11/1 but its jusr to cold for most sailors. Bob

As long as I can

According to the Town of Oyster Bay, all moorings must be out of the water by Dec. 31, 2007. Last season I was determined to keep our Hunter 27 in until the end of November. We had it hauled at the end of October. It just got too cold for us. It is a shame because some of our best Northeast winds begin in September.

So Cal "Winterizing"

We sail from Channel Islands Harbor. A friend described our winterizing process in this way: "We change down from SPF 30 to SPF 15 on our sunscreen, and increase the ratio of red to white wine." Pretty nice to sail in a year-round area! Gary Kunkel Catalina 30 "Folie a Deux"

Early December...

We put off hauling until early December in hopes of one more day of sailing... The winterizing routine begins with the fresh water system early November, the engine the first week of December, and finally hauling in mid-December... I have on several occasions gotten one last sail in over the Thanksgiving holidays... http://www.sailingseadragon.com/winterize.htm Oh me, oh my... I am not ready for winter!!!! Garner

No winter closure

We leave the boat in the water year round. One never knows when a January thaw will be a good time for a frostbite sail. We short haul in the summer and back in the water. Jim

In Florida

We have mostly good weather all year around. I learned to sail with what I call the November witch, a wind on the Inter-coastal here that can gust pretty hard. But the boat is in the water all year except for bottom maintenance.

Sailing days become fewer December through March but we often have good days each month. Just need to dress a bit warmer.

Last Year I didn't Pack it in.

I usually pull the boat by the first of November, but last year I was able to sail every week but five. This was from april 30, 2006 to April 30, 2007. I have to pay for my slip wheather I have the boat in it or not. I know the boat is more secure in my back yard, but last year I decided to leave it in for the winter. I'll pull it this November just to attend to checking gudgeon bolts and the swing keel bolt. I know I will miss some winter sailing, but the bottom needs maintenance. Kim Wright

Cold comes early in Maine

Full time teaching and cold weather cause us to pull the boat the first weekend in October in Rockland Maine. When working 3 hrs away from home port, it's hard to get away on weekends. Retirement coming this June. September and October sailing in Maine is fantastic. Good breeze, no bugs, and clear air. Looking forward to next year.

Our sailing season starts in October.

Our summers here in Tampa Bay and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico are hot, humid, with calm winds and almost daily thunderstorms. We have to pick and choose the days that we go out and you do not want to go too far or be gone for to long because of the threat of Hurricanes. But come October, the winds pick up, the temperatures get cooler and once we hit November the threat of Hurricanes goes away. We will probably have good sailing weather all the way thru April of the following year. We take advantage of the summer months to do maintenance and paint the bottom. Oh, will sneak out for 3-4 days sail but nothing serious.

Is the dead line for the town owned marina and I'm out sometime near that date or a week before but a couple of years ago I never pulled it out, just put it in a wet storage marina and did some sailing right into January and only short hauled for bottom paint every couple of years but I found a yard that puts me back in by March 30th and that gives me an extra month in the spring. So now we have some of the best sailing without the knucklehead powerboaters and as far as I'm concerned I won't start thinking about oil changes, winterising and covering the boat untill at least till Halloween :)

First week in November

When I get into November, I play it week to week. I usually pull the boat from a small inland lake around Nov. 1st, but I have gone as late as Nov. 30th when the weather has been warm. The main thing to avoid is freezing on the launch ramps. The lakes are typically open into late December. Some of the best sailing of the year is in Sept. and Oct., when the leaves are changing and the bugs are dying. Yesterday is a case in point. Unusually warm, fewer powerboats, and good wind. All winter

Sometime in the middle of December I will drain the water tanks and blow out the water lines plus pump out the holding tank. I add that pink anti-freeze to the water tanks and also run some through the cooling system for the engine. Then we just keep sailing all winter. After we are done sailing for the day we run the pink anti-freeze back through the engine cooling system. Some of the best winds for sailing are in the winter. It is fun sailing in the winter. The only boats you see are die hard fishermen. You don't have to contend with drunks, water skiers, jet skis and speed boats seeing how close they come to you.
