Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with the closed-cell foam (EVA I think) fenders? I'm docked on the Hudson River, where it's pretty rough (30knt ferry traffic). I just blew out two 18" Taylor Made Tuff End fenders (the round orange ones) and was wondering if there were any alternatives, short of hanging tires off the side. Thanks... Cris

You gotta be kidding, your ferry going at 30 knots? Here in Puget Sound, the state ferry could get sued for going at that speed. In fact, the large ferries, by law, has to slow down around some of the islands because the ferry wakes were washing away some of the shoreline, banks and bulkheads. Haven't they ever heard of the saying "You are responsible for your wake"? This doesn't answer your questions about alternative fenders, but your ferry system should be paying for the replacement of your dead fenders.

The ferries that used to run to the casinos from Hempstead Harbor would easily be doing 30kts, but they were hydrofoils and didn't leave much of a wake. That aside, any vessel is responsible for its wake and damage associated with it. I would video the wake and let the CG know about it.

Yea, I know about the "responsible for your wake" theory, but up here some of the worst wakes come from USCG, NJ State Police, etc., who pop in the marina to go to the nearby Starbucks, then go full gas out with twin 250hp's. It's just rough here and that's how it is. The wakes get compounded from bouncing off each side of the river, and at rush hour it's pretty crazy. I was going to call Taylor Made but a few people told me that their warranty wasn't applicable here (since it was extremely bad), so I was a little weary. Not sure if that was true or not. Does anyone know if they ever turn down the warranty?
