Peggie, The regular clorax bleach used to say on the bottle that it can be used to purify water in an emergency so I had no problem using it in my tanks. Lately the clorax and other bleaches are called ULTRA which contains something else(?) in it which eliminated the statement that can be used to purify ..... In fact it contains a warning that it should not be used for that purpose. Do you know what the ULTRA thing is? (it's probably on the bottle but I wouldn't know what it meant anyway since I'm not a chemist). Nobody seems to carry regular pure bleach anymore. Even the store brands add the ultra to match Clorax. Thanks.

I have no idea what's in Ultra, but

the only thing the original should ever be used for is annual recommissioning...adding a little to each fill has always been both a bad idea and a waste of bleach...'cuz a capful isn't enough to purify, but it's still corrosive enough to do damage.

Same stuff, just more concentration!

Lee: It is the same stuff, it is just more concentrated. http://www.clorox.com/health/disaster/disaster5.html http://www.clorox.com/products/ucbfaq.html

Japan

The last time I was in Tokyo Japan(1980's) bleach was used instead of chlorine to purify their potable drinking water.

Thanks for the info Steve

I guess the new stuff is 7 percent sodium hypochlorite instead of the old standard 5.25 percent. Pool supply products are often a 10 percent solution. Anhydrous sodium hypochlorite is also available. When used to purifying drinking water wait longer if the water is cloudy and/or cold.

Actually, the "premimum" brands have always

been 7%...and the bargain brands 5%. In fact, Clorox even had an ad campaign based on that. I'll do some digging, but I suspect that the only difference between "ultra" Clorox and "original" Clorox MAY only be the size of the jug. "Original" used to come in gallon jugs...Ultra jugs are .75 gal and 1.5 gal. It's a trend among a whole lot of products lately...I remember reading about it several months ago. Change the flavor, change the label--but don't change the price, just reduce the package size. The assumption is, the buying public is too stupid to figure it out.
