Considering the CL-S and CL-W instrument packages for my boat. The main appeal is the low price. I spoke with clippermarineusa.com the exclusive importer, they had nothing but good things to say (he's also a raymarine distributor), although with the cavieat that they are simple no frills instruments. He said in the 3 years he has been importing them, he never had a legitimate failure come back as a return (broken wind vane / cups aside). He claims they are pretty popular in Europe...

I know the wind instrument will not do true wind, but my chart plotter will if it has the wind data input, and these instruments are all NMEA 0183, so I can easily wire them in.

I would like to replace my old SR Mariner speed and (non functional) depth instruments with a new speed and wind, and these look like a low cost way to do so. My biggest concern is that all the mounting holes and thru holes are all smaller for this so that will be a little tough to figure out, and getting another wire up the mast will not be easy, my conduits are pretty full. I have been considering the TackTick instruments for this to avoid the in mast wireing of the wind instrument, but that will cost roughly 5 times more than this!

Any input on the brand would be greatly apprecieated.

I've used both the Clipper GPS Speed and Wind on my old First 235. I have friends in Europe that had good results with them as well. There are entry level for sure but well made and I never had a problem with them. As you note the Wind is NMEA out only so no true wind, so it is useless for racers. And the masthead wind sensor is gigantic. And the cutouts are large and a complex shape. The mastbox is a great idea if it works for you. But the displays are huge and very easy to read. I would buy them again for a small boat no reservations.

the mast box would be an option (it appears I have the same exact rig as you, except with a rigid vang instead of the boom kicker), but I also have two old instruments in the cockpit that I want to replace and put them over the existing holes.

My concern is actually are the clipper instruments large enough to cover the old holes completly!

Have you had any problems with the mast head instrument? my research shows that some people get years of life while others fail in months....

I hear you about needing/wanting to cover existing holes. The Clipper housings are BIG, I cannot imagine they would not cover the holes, but some of the cutout might be exposed to the back. But I think that would be OK.

I've had perfect luck with the masthead. But I have heard reports of failures. As you know Clippers are made by NASA Instruments in the UK. Some have said it stands for Not Another Shite Anemometer. But I would get one before I got a Raymarine ST40 Rotovecta at the same price.

after lots of reading, It sounds like the masthead failures can be prevented with a little loctite on the end of the shaft, aside from that the reviews all sound pretty decent...

Strongly considering buying the unit now...
