Clevis pin material

Hi all,

Inherited a Harken furler from a friend and need the bottom pin set for the clevis pin to attach the forestay to the chain plate. I know 18-8 is one of the standards for material and am wondering if anyone knows if there is anything special about clevis pin material. I am fortunate enough to work in a machine shop and have access to many different grades of stainless steel. I was thinking of remaking the pin (I need 1/4" and have the 5/16" set) out of either 18-8 or 17-4PH which is touted as a stronger material.

Opinions??

You usually want to consider how you want the thing to fail before you select a material. Is the pin or the expensive furler piece the part that you want to let go first? make that piece less strong so it fails first.
A good example is the chain plates for mast shrouds. if you beef up the shrouds and turnbuckles and then get turtled and the mast is carried away does it take the chain plates with it. That would leave a large hole in the deck I'm thinking which will only make things worse. Better to loose the whole mast and have a watertight hull than to loose the mast and have a hole to contend with also.

Have you considered just ordering a new pin from a Harken distributor?

Graingers for SS clevis pins: big selection, great prices. 316 or 18-8 SS from WM is the same as 316 or 18-8 SS from Graingers.
