this isnt a new topic but i'm in the middle of prepping my teak for refinishing. looking to see if anyone ever tried this method of one coat Cetol and two coats of automotive clearcoat.

are there disadvantages to this method?
what happens when you need to refininsh?

I used 2 coats of cetol natural and 2 coats cetol clear/gloss last time I refinished my deck hand rails. Held up well for 4.5 years. Not bad for southern exposure.

Sounds like a good plan but I find a longer lasting finish with Honey teak which is similar to the two part Bristol finish. Unfortunately there is no perfect teak finish imo. Thanks for the video.

My wife used Peitte Sea Gold this season..... stripped all the old garbage and so far so good. She put 5 coats on I believe

Use the Cetol gloss top coat. It is compatible with the base coat, gives a nice gloss and has the ability to swell and shrink with the teak. Auto clearcoat is too hard and will not expand and contract as much as a wood substrate requires.

There are a lot of products out there. Going through all the work i want it to last a few years.

Don’t use any finish on the teak (my opinion). Just scrub across the grain with salt water and a moderately soft brush. Far less work than messing around with finishes that don’t stick to teak anyway, and nothing to attract dirt like teak oils tend to do.

Teak, like any wood, changes color in the Sun. It greys. That's why spar-varnishes have UV inhibitors. Clear-coats don't have that.
Putting a hard finish on teak requires cleaning the natural oils off with alcohol or similar solvents.

Honey Teak by Signature?
Yes. I like that the weather conditions don't have to be perfect, which they rarely are and a new coat can be applied every 20 to 60 plus minutes without any sanding! Allows all coats to be applied in a day in most weather.
Some tips learned the hard way. The first coat if done in the sun will sometimes development small bubbles that need to be scuffed off with a course 3m pad. The stuff is super thin and splatters very easily so mask well. Order only what you need as the hardener once turned solid on me over the winter.
Gives a very deep gloss that is very durable. Lots of good information about it in other posts here.
Good luck with whatever you do.

Although I let my teak go natural, my local Florida Beneteau dealer recommends WaterLox products to seal and to finish.

The reason, I am told, that teak is put on boats is b/c it's a hard, durable, low maintenance wood. Yet, so many folks complain about the work of maintaining it, even to the point of avoiding buying boats that have teak. There's a disconnect here somewhere. I have teak deck--the glue-on type--along with other teak. I do with it as DougM has said. No oil or any kind of coating is applied.

Teak needs additional protection in the cold climate freeze-thaw cycles where unprotected waterlogged teak will freeze and split. That is why northern boats shelter their boats or shrink wrap them.

I've not owned a boat anywhere where it freezes in winter; among the lucky I guess.:) But if the wood is salted by regular washing w/seawater, still not enough protection by freezing point depression? I wonder how the old timers of the wooden ships handled that problem.
