Recently replaced all motor mounts on my universal diesal(11 hsp). I adjusted the drip rate on the gland nut. What is the best way to get the right clearance between the transmission flange and the coupler on the shaft. The coupler looks like a dampner. Is the clearance supposed to be .005 all the way around and aligned evenly? The stuffing box gets a little warm and the vibration is a little annoying throughout the boat. Any idea's will be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Coupler

Steve; That big of metal just aft of the trans is a coupling device (I forget the exact name right now) used to compensate for small errors in alignment. You cannot get it perfect because it uses a rubber material inside. If perfection is important to you, remove it, have a new shaft machined/installed and the alignment done.

shaft vibration

I am experiencing vibration between 1000 and 1500 rpm , sounds like a wooden knocking.
