Hi y’all, time to replace the clear cover over the instrument panel, and the wooden panel itself. What do I use, where do I get it and how do you drill/cut it at home? Thanks!!!
Is it cracked or just dirt and sun damaged. Some times these can be cleaned and polished. Car detailing shops sell plastic cleaners and polishes that do a nice job on the plastic lenses of headlights. I’ve used them each spring to clean up the plastic cover of my cockpit instruments.
Your choice is pretty much limited to acrylic Plexiglass or polycarbonate Lexan. Both are fine. Acrylic will not yellow in the sun, but is prone to crazing and cracking as it ages. Polycarbonate will yellow eventually but is much more impact resistant. For this application, the difference is probably insignificant.
You can get either most anywhere. Hardware stores or online. You can drill and cut it with normal tools however use finer teeth than you would with wood and go slower, but try to avoid melting it. Add tape or make a wood sandwich to reduce chipping. You can heat burnish the edges if you like.
