Cleaning the holding tank??

We are unable to use KO in our tanks because the vent is about 10 feet from the tank, so we have been using Odorlos with reasonable success although we have to "re-treat" about once a week. I know you DO NOT recomend using detergents, bleach, etc. Is there anything else to use that actually cleans and or disolves the fats that accumulate inside the tank? Or is flushing with fresh water after each pump out enough? Thanks for the advise.

10 feet?? Don't understand why.

What is the problem with the vent being 10 feet away and using K.O.?

Add about 4 oz of C.P.

at least a day before you pump out. The enzymes in it will "eat" the fats etc and keep the tank clean. You can get C.P. from the online store here.

10' is too long to keep...

..the environment inside the tank aerobic, which is necessary for bio-active odor control...it's too long to permit any exchange of air outside the boat with the gasses in the tank I see no reason why any vent line has to be that long. The boat builder may have done it, but that doesn't mean it can't be redirected to a location in the hull that's closer to the tank. And no matter what you use in the tank, the better the ventilation, the less odor you''ll have. For a complete explanation, read the article on odor control in holding tanks in the reference library of the Head Mistress forum.

C.P. vs Rid-X

Peggie Just curious -- are the enzymes & other waste disposal critters formulated in C.P. any different than what the supermarket sells for home septic tank use (e.g., Rid-X)? If so, why? --Ron

Different bacteria produce different enzymes

Not all enzymes are the same, nor are all enzyme products created equally. All bacteria produce enzymes, but different strains of bacteria produce different types of enzymes. RidX and similar products are cultured to break down waste in an anerobic environment--a septic tank. C.P is cultured from bacteria that are "bred" to emulsify grease and animal fats. There are about 10x the quantity of enzymes per volume in C.P. than in RidX--which is the major reason it costs more--and C.P. also has cleaning agents in it.
