We have unstepped the masts and the upper portions of the shrouds are showing the early signs of rust (no burrs or visible cracking). They were replaced 6-8 years ago and appear to have alot of life left in them. What is the best process to remove the rust and clean them? Also, what should they be coated with to inhibit future rust? rl

I've had good luck using the (non-petroleum based) gun oil ballistol on boat metal. It has unusual properties (forms a precipitate with water, neutralizing it) which make it a good protective coating, and dissolves a lot of kinds of deposits. I would spray it on the mast and all rigging before putting it aside for winter storage: in the spring whatever "rust" is a dissolvable deposit will come off with a pot scrubbing pad.
