Most of the time we use dish detergent and a sponge. For the really bad stuff, like engine room oil and grease (red wine stains), a Scotch bite pad and scouring powder does the trick.

What do you do to clean starboard.
Nick
The same way you clean the port! Ha! Sorry...I couldn't resist. I have good luck with Simple Green and also a spray Clorox Cleaner (like from the store, not just Clorox) it it's really dirty a scrubbing sponge with the Clorox Cleaner.

Oxyclean and a scrubby or brush. But let it sit a few minutes to get the full bleach effect

I have rust stains from the screws that secure the wood strips on the stern seats. I have not found anything that will remove those rust stains. I have tried variious rust removers but no joy.
Anyone have a solution (no pun intended) for this?

Phosphoric acid will remove any rust stains. It might take numerous applications, but in the end it will work. However, on wood you might want to thin it considerably and do even more applications. It might bleach the wood, so be careful. Ospho is the trade name.

Have you tried Barkeeper's Friend? Comes in a liquid type paste, or in a powder form like Comet cleanser. It is not (primarily) an abrasive, it works chemically. You can buy it at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc. The active ingredient is oxalic acid.

Phosphoric acid will remove any rust stains.
:plus: If the stain is truly RUST or Iron Oxide, Naval Jelly (spreadable with a paint brush Phosphoric Acid).

But sometimes a stain can be ingrained or below surface so a "soaking" of hours may be needed.

If it doesn't respond to time the I am attaching a Starboard chemical resistance table.

Pick a chemical with NR (not recommended) and sparingly clean the stain.
The one that looks easy to obtain is Carbon Tetrachloride ( spot remover/contact cleaner / dry cleaning). Carbona® was what I have used.

Rust stains: I have tried abrasive cleaners and I think I have tried Naval Jelly. It has been a while since I have tried anything because nothing I tried worked so I pretty much gave up. If I can get some phosphoric acid I will try that.

Disslove in water.

Then add this weak muriatic Acid.

I have done this to pre clean some rusty chain in a bucket.
