Is it wise to clean one's own sails or is this a job only for the pros? I like to do as much work as I can myself on my boat, but I'm concerned about ruining the dacron and being friendly to the environment. Any suggestions?

Depends on what you are looking for.

Marc: If your sails are in good condition but just a little dirty, there is no reason not to try this yourself. Here is a guide to cleaning and spotting your sails. If this does not do it for you, you can always pay the big bucks to have it done. (http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/doityourself/sailcleaning.htm) If you have an old limp sail, you may want to consider sail reconditioning at a place like SailCare.
