To John Kivel; We have the other 170 berthed on the other side of Dave and Debbies boat. I was searching for a way to get the dark stains off our deck and came across your post regarding the boat next to yours. She (Debbie) uses 409 to clean the hull each time they finish sailing. I had a good laugh and knew instantly it had to be Debbie. I have tried to get her to do mine but Dave insists on my buying his beer while she works and he says she takes a long time (lot of beer). I didn't think I could afford it. Anyway, we tried the 409 treatment and it cleaned the boat but didn't do much for the dark stains and streaks. Guess you have to do it every time. In any case we are going to move on to the wax method. Midwest Sailing has a good wax with a very fine abrasive cleaner. I'll let you know how it works. Trouble is, as long as there is wind, who wants to be cleaning in lieu of sailing. Especially the 170 as it is a lot of fun to sail. Best boat I have had.

Starbright

I'll give it a try. We tried Starbright Marine polish last night on a small stained area, and rubbed it on and didn't let it dry. That worked pretty good, except for the scuff marks. Eat your heart out 409 Debby. There was not even a whisper of wind to sail. Been a poor summer compared to last year.

Pretty boat!

Hi Tom and Patty! Your boat loooks great! We were out this morning with just a reefed main - no powerboats, it was great!

Dave

Thanks, Heard you have had some problems that got in the way of sailing. Hope all is well with you both. We just got back from a late afternoon sail. Wind was heavy, gusty, with big shifts in direction. Tried reefing but that was a drag, so we rigged full for a while and had a real ride. Wind let up a bit so Patti sailed without the jib and did real well. Actually the polish works best for the stains, and soft scrub is good on the scuffs. We still haven't done the whole boat.

Magic Pad

Mr. Clean Magic Pad from Walmart will take of all the black marks. I always wash the area afterwards with soap and water after I use the magic pad.

small world

Wow! our boats are right next to each other and we end up talking here!! aren't we supposed to be sitting on the deck at the club and enjoying refreshing beverages???? You guys have not seen much of me this year, I have not had much time for sailing (we bought a house). Anyway, I used soft scrub on the scuff marks and it works great. Then I spent HOURS waxing my boat with whatever wax they recommended last spring (McGuire's something or other). No difference. I'll try something else next spring, for now I am just hoping that september brings more sailing. I hope to be on the lake this Friday in the afternoon, hope to see you there! john

Wax

John, We tried the Starbright cleaner wax on a small area. They have it across the street at Midwest Sailing. I just rubbed it on and didn't let it dry to a haze. Just keep rubbing until it is gone. That seemed to work real well on the lighter dark streaked areas. The soft scrub works well on the scuffs. We were out last night and tonight and the air finally showed up. We had two real pleasant evening sails. The Laser racers didn't want to come back in the air was so good. They ended up taking masts/sails down in the dark.

at last!

We did sail on Friday, all four of us. The wind was just strong enough to blow us into the middle of the lake before it died completely. The kids jumped off the boat and swam around a bit before we started the long paddle back. It's a good sailboat by the way, but a lousy canoe! Saturday was a different story. The kids were at a friends house, so my wife and I had our first "date" in months, we were planning on a movie, but the wind was perfect. We stayed on the lake for several hours, until the darkness made us come in. Best sail all year. John

Way to go, John!

Great to hear you are on the water again John. I noticed the wind was good around here on Sat (today is even better!) and the thought of heading out to the club almost clouded my judgement, but alas, I promised to get some long neglected projects done - don't it figure? We are going up north this w/e so if the weather is good, I should get a few hours in sailing. By the way everyone, I'll be looking to try out a few of these cleaning ideas. I have tried Fantastic and Simple Green before, both seem okay for general cleaning, but not the real dirty stuff.
