Several weeks ago I did a Penetrol treatment on my 1981 Pearson 323. After approximately four coats it looked FANTASTIC. But... a week later after a few heavy rains the non-skid surface turned a mildew gray. I thought that a good marine soap would clean it up but I also had to use clorox and it is still appears to have mildew on the non-skid areas. I didn't get a chance to put any type of sealer/wax on the surface because hurricane Charley paid us a visit so I anchored her out. What is a good recommended cleaner and wax as a final coat. Thanks, Tarheel

Nonskid

Waxing nonskid has few proponents. I tried a commercial non-skid wax, and the surface became too slippery. A friend swears by 50/50 mix of clorox and water every six months to a year. He has a 1987 or 1988 C34 and it looks great. Stu

What happens

to the wax on the the rest of the boat after the 50/50 mix of clorox and water? You know, where it runs over the side etc. Thanks, Paul

Sorry to hear that,

This is a good reason not to use the stuff, it attracts dirt like a magnet. Your best bet is clean the penetrol off with thinners, clean the deck with a good cleaner, and use Aurora Non skid wax, follow the directions, you will be pleased with the product! Aurora makes a good deck/boat cleaner too!

Penetrol isn't a hull finish...

It should only be used to prep the hull for compounding. And when it's used as it's intended to be used, it's excellent.

Sorry to hear that....

I only wish that I had know in advance that it was a magnet for dirt. Maybe that I have given it a thurough cleaning it won't attract dirt as easy. What thinners/cleaners would you recommend and where is Aurora Non Skid wax available. Thanks, Tarheel

Penetrol - Johnson's Future Acrylic Floor Finish

Try good old paint thinner and a lot of rags. That might work if the penetrol hasn't cured completely. If not try Island Girl Pink or Poly Glow cleaner. Find a good Scotch cleaning pad to help the scrubbing. I investigated using penetrol but was warned about the exact problem you described. There are alternatives available including Island Girl non-skid sealer. Others were wax and Johnson's Future Acrilyc Floor Finish. From email lists and a couple of sailers here, Future seemed to be the ticket. I just finished doing my entire deck and cockpit in Johnson's Future Floor Finish (2 - 3 coats). It came out great but the surface must be very clean before its applied otherwise the dirt gets sealed in and shows through. Before using it, I strongly recommend testing it somewhere that's easy to clean if it doesn't work out. We have a beige-colored H25.5 so its s little tough to determine whether Future has a yellow tint. It does wash off with ammonia. YMMV.

Thinners

I am not familiar with penetrol, but, possibly the label will tell what to thin it with, or possibly tell what will remove it from spills, etc. If not, try turpentine first, then move to enamel thinner, laquer thinner, last would be acetone.

Island Girl - NONONONONO

Use Island Girl non-skid sealer only if you want your original problem multiplied 10 times over. I and several others on my dock used it - and yes we followed directions - only to find in about two to three months exactly what you found after Penetrol. We all ended up having to use Soft Scrub to remove the non-skid. It not only attracted dirt, it also seemed to be a mold "fertilizer". Mold and mildew thrived. The Island Girl Pink seems to work in certain situations as advertised, but it's the only Island Girl product that I've had or seen anyone else have any luck with.

Island Girl Non-skid Sealer

I don't want to start a controversy or flame war. I'm only reporting my results. I bought a dose of Island Girl Non-skid sealer and tried it as directed (VERY THIN aplication rinsed off about an hour later). I closely followed the printed instructions as well as the handwritten ones from Jim at Island Girl. I didn't have any luck with it, it remained stick after several days. I cleanded it off with Pink. That said, I do know some who have used it and are satisfied. I'm not. I did have very good results by using Johnson's Future Acrylic Floor Finish as described in an earlier post.
