I have recently started spring cleaning on my boat. I have found that the fenders I had stored in a cockpit locker are cover with mildew. I have tried Clorox cleaner and it gets some of the stain off but not close to all of it. Are there any tricks to getting them white again? Or am I stuck with Dalmation fenders.

Fender cleaner

I saved this info from a previous inquiry on the same subject. A product called Casterol degreaser he claims you just spray it on and let it set for about a minute then spray it off presto clean fenders. Available at Wallmart for about $5.00 a gallon. I have not tried this but at only $5.00 per gal it's worth a try. I've also heard white wall tire cleaner works well. Let us know if you try either and the end results.

Fender maintenance

The question I always have to answer is "how badly do I want to degrade the original finish to get it clean"? The extreme I have used is acetone, which I suspect makes the surface quicker to get dirty again. I have used a cleaner wax like Seapower, either alone or as a follow up protection coat after acetone. Right now I am using a commercial fender cleaner (Westmarine house brand). It gets the dirt off but not the stains, which is enough for me right now. I do consider fenders to be somewhat expendable, and replace them as necessary. I just replace the worst ones occasionally. I also use one older set at my marina, and a newer set when I'm out on a cruise.

Clean Fenders

I just used laundry detergent and bleach! Put 'em in the sink (or tub) with really hot water, weigh them down to keep 'em below the surface, and come back tomorrow morning. A light scrubbing had mine looking like new!

Mildew Cleaner

We had tried everything to remove mildew off some life jackets we had. We then used Starbrite Mildew Remover and they came completely clean. I would give it a shot on your fenders.

Try Softscrub, the one with bleach in it... It work pretty good and is cheap. Regards, Chris
