Cleaning Holding Tanks

I have never used any chemicals or other cleaners in the heads/holding tanks on my boat. However when checking the pipework I found that I have an inspection hatch on the tank. As the boat is out of commission for the winter and the tank enpty should I clean the tank - if so how. I could just hose out (carefully) through the inspection hatch or should I be thinking about using something else?

At most, just hose it out...but...

Plenty of clean water to stir up any sludge so it can be pumped out is all that's needed...although if you insist, you could fill the tank with water and a gallon of low-suds liquid detergent...then go sailing and tack a lot--which you can't very well do while the boat is on the hard for the winter. Wait till spring and do it as part of recommissioning after the boat goes back into the water...so that the water going in can be pumped out and/or discharged overboard. In the future, do it in the fall as part of prep for winter layup.

Peggy - Many thanks for the response. Although the boat is out of commission it is still in the water so I can easily do as you have suggested.

Every punp out

Maybe I'm just lucky but there is a water supply hose right by my pump-out station. I usually flush the tank though the deck fitting after I pump out then pump again. Since the pump-out hose goes into the bottom of the tank, I assume that stuff gets stirred up pretty well when I do this.

Yes, Bill you are lucky...

on the Chesapeake, the marina's are tighter than a tick about pumpouts, that is if their equipment is working at all. Any water in the tank and it's charge for a second pump-out, etc. And, a few have gone to a timed pumpout where you can't even get the tank emptied before they want you gone from their piers. Too many powerboats waiting to buy $2.50 fuel from them.
