My water smells terrible. I've used clorine but not effective enough. What is the best way to clean the fresh water tank located under the rear quarter berth??? Thank's, Steve

The answer is in the article...

"Fresh Water Maintenance" in the Head Mistress forum Reference Library (on the forum home page). It explains what causes foul smelling and tasting fresh water, and how to cure it. Btw...if the problem ONLY exists in your hot water (the cold water side is fine), that's an entirely different issue, one that cannot be solved by cleaning out the system, or even cleaning out the hot water tank. In fact, bleach and other attempts to clean out the system can actually be harmful. So before doing anything to cure a hot water only problem, let me know.

B-brite

Steve, If you were a wine maker, this is what you would use to clean your bottles. The stuff is amazing. I have never tried it to clean out a tank but it does wonders to a crusty 5 gallon glass bottle. I think the only problem you will have is flushing the tank after cleaning. Some stainless tanks have hand size inspection ports. I would try Peggy's idea first and if it didn't work I would try the B-Brite. r.w.landau

Water Tank

Steve; It may be the time to remove the cover of the water tank, give the tank a good scrub and rinse and re bed the top. When you re bed the top, use a silicon that dries to odorless. The first time I did this, I used the wrong type of sealant and the water always tasted awful. Removing the lid, cleaning, and resealing rates a o out of 5 on the frustation scale. It's not hard to do. Now that you have properly cleaned the tank, periodic rinses of baking soda or clorox bleach through the water system will keep the water tasting good. Also, while you are at this, maybe replace the water hoses and the filter. Just remember the boat owner time honered slogan of; "How hard can it be." regards; Mac Lindsay 1984 H31

Don't consider opening the tank it's a molded tank and can't be opened.

Tank

Steve; The lid of the water tank is removable. You can tell that by all the screws holding it on. The water tank is molded in as part of the grid structure. They had to have a removable lid to put in the baffle and to access the hose fittings. Rod, do you own a 83-88 H31 and have you checked the water tank installation of the H31'? My information is given from practical experience of having removed the lid and it is removable. They made it that way. regards, Mac

Yes, I owned a 1987 31'. Mine was a molded tank that was not accessible, only had the water line fittings. Kind of like Hunter in those days anything goes " got any of those on the shelf" ? Okay that will fit!

Inspection port.

My 84 H31 has an inspection port for the fresh water tank. It's great for cleaning or just to see how much water is in the tank. If your's doesn't, you might consider installing one while you have the lid removed. Bob P.S. Our 84 does have a removable lid.

Water tank .

My "87" h31 has a removable water tank cover and I added a second inspection cover plate to access the small baffled section of the tank. It works great. My odor problem came from the filler hose and if you replace it with a good quality smooth surface hose it will make all the differance in world.
