What is the best products to use in cleaning decks, hulls, teak etc? Is there alternatives to the expensive marine store products or are they worth the price? Gary

Cleaning

Teak: Mix Clorox, Spic& Span powder, and Murphy Oil Soap and apply using a scotchbrite pad. Flush well with water. Finish up with smooth sandpaper. Coat w/ 3 coats of Cetol. Decks: Non-phospate detergent, (Spic & Span), and soft brush. I add a little Joy for suds and 3 drops of Mrs. Stewarts Bluing. Makes the white shine. The special marine cleaners are overpriced CRAP! Use a spray bottle of Tilex with a steam setting for stubborn stains. Use Woody wax on the anti-skid after cleaning to keep spider poop and gull poop from staining. Cap'n Dave

I clean my hull

...with a soft sponge and bucket of clean water with some biodegradable liquid soap in it. I use a soft bristle brush, too. I clean the waterline scum with "The Works" on a Dobie Pad. If the "Works" ain't working (depends on how bad things are), I use "On and Off" with a soft bristle brush, washing it off with a hose after 30 secs or so. I clean my decks with the same liquid soap used on the hull. I also use "Sof Scrub" now and then, but carefully as it is quite abrasive. Finally, I have used my 1700 psi powerwasher to clean the non-skid, but that has a steep learning curve associated with it. If you get the powerwasher nozzle anywhere near a caulked seam, say goodbye to the caulk....

Baking Soda

Old trick learned from a good friend, an old salt! Wet the deck, sprinkle on Baking Soda, not a lot needed, scrub with a soft bristle brush, and rinse. Really good on the non-skid areas!

re: teak

Hi! what Cap'n Dave said about the Teak Cleaning, someone in the boatyard gave me the exact recipe and looks beautiful and mine (on deck)was very dull and sun bleached. Teak: Mix Clorox, Spic& Span powder, and Murphy Oil Soap and apply using a scotchbrite pad. Flush well with water. ~B Seadance :)

For non skid

I really liked the Starbright teflon cleaner for non skid surfaces.

Mary Kate Non Skid Detail

I've had good luck with Mary Kate Non Skid & Deck Detail. It's also good for removing old wax and anything else on the hull, prior to waxing. Capt Bill, Never thought of useing blueing for brightening fiberglass. but makes sense. Does it only work on white?
