I had my sails cleaned last fall, but before I reinstall them I want to clean the mast and boom. Does anyone have a view on what is the most appropriate/best cleaning agent to use? Thanks in advance, Peter Milne S/V Blue Heron

Depends on what you are trying to remove!

Peter: It depends on what you are trying to get off the spar. Obviously you can use soap and water as a general cleaner. If you are trying to remove grease or lubrication type stuff you may want to try something like Eagle Wheel Cleaner for Alum/Mag wheels. This stuff is strong but should not be to caustic. I would try a spot and see how it reacts before taking on the entire job. Also be sure to see how it reacts with the gel coat.

Be careful what you use...

you don't want to remove the anodizing on your mast. We just use a sprayon like 409 or Simple Green with warm water and a scrubbie to remove the usual grime without scratching the finish. Then dry and finish with a good coat of paste wax.
