Cleaning a Webasto Heater

I have a Webasto SG1577 diesel hydronic heater installed by Sure Marine Service in Seattle. It functioned perfectly on our three week trip from Portland, OR to the San Juan Islands and back in June (heated most nights) but on our outing this past weekend it failed to fire up and the fuel pump did not run either.

I spoke to a service tech at Sure Marine and he walked me through resetting the controller after which the fuel pump did run but the burner did not fire up, There was a lot of white smoke coming from the exhaust, indicative of the presense of unburned fuel. The tech surmised that the unit needed to be "serviced" which I took to mean that it needs to be partially disassembled and cleaned. I have read that the burners tend to accumulate soot/coke that impedes air flow causing failure to ignite.

I've found YouTube videos cleaning other Webasto models (air based units) but not for a hydronic unit. It is difficult to tell if the burner portion can be removed with the unit still installed or if it will need to be removed for disassembly and cleaning. I have found a service manual for it but it doesn't address that particular question. The photo shows the controller (white box) and the burner end of the Webasto unit.

Does anyone have experience with cleaning a Webasto unit similar to this one?
