Cleaner for Rub Rail? Acetone?

Trying to clean up the Rub Rail on my Hunter H376. The only thing that cleans it is acetone. But using acetone is a pain, it evaporates so fast. Does anybody have another solution? Mineral Spirits doesnt work.

What you use to clean it depends on what you dirtied it with. Acetone is great for some things but useless for others. Xylene is very good for some other things. Methylene chloride with remove stuff that the others won't touch, including your liver and brain. Short answer is: if acetone works that's what you use.

Hexane would be as effective, less toxic and if you intend doing this often, would be better for the rub rail as acetone will slowly but surely destroy the plasticizers which keep it from becoming brittle. SoftScrub would probably work as well and be better in the long run for both you and the rub rail.

Yeow! Put that acetone back in the car! It will dissolve your boat!

A product called Greased Lightning will restore your gray rub rail to like-new condition. My local Home Depot carries it as does Stop & Shop.

Use whatever you want to clean it, then use Fleetwax - Collinite -- when it's clean, it'll look great.
