I am looking for the best method for cleaning the gray vinyl rub rail on a 340. My rail always seems to be dirty and also seems to collect mildew and black stains which are hard to clean. I have tried using a cleaner/wax. Anybody got a good method for keeping the rail clean?

Dear Chris, This subject has been discussed in detail. If you don't get much response, check out the archives. I do believe that Island Girl Cleaner was recommended as the best cleaner. Good luck, Mike D

The rail is actually PVC..

If yo go in the archive as Mike ssuggests , the is a post by the manufacturer of the rail a couple weeks back. Personally we use PVC paatio furnature cleaner our ours. Spray it on , brush it, wash it off and they look like new.

Denatured Alcolol

Chris, I have had very good luck using denatured alcolol to clean the gray rub rails. My Hunter dealer recommended this to me two years ago, and it works very well. Chris Webb s/v Grand Cru II

I've had good luck

with Mary Kate Inflatable boat cleaner (Boat/US) and with whitewall tire cleaner (they both seem to be the same or similar products), but I'm gonna try the patio furnitur PVC cleaner and the denatured alcohol, and see if they work as well or better, just for kicks.

Try This

I just cleaned my 30 amp power cord by using Castrol super clean. I get the super clean at a NAPA automotive store, I have seen the dirty rub rails and think the super clean will do the job! Good luck, John Kudera

rub rail

What I do is clean the rub rail with Island Girl Pink. I use a very soft 3M pad (gray in color) to rub the rail clean. Then I apply Island Girl Sealer. The sealer is somewhat effective in sealing out the stains and makes the cleaning process much easier. This is a real problem with no easy solution. I was thinking of painting the rail a darker color so the discolorization would not show up so much. I believe the discolorizaton is caused by air polution.

Check out the Gel Coats and Plastics Forum. Dr. Willis is doing some testing on products for cleaning the rub rails.

Acetone and Wax

My rub rail (rubber type on the newer Hunters)went completely black and no cleaner seemed to be able to clean the dirt off. Out of desperation, I tried a little acetone. The acetone cleaned the dirt off very well. However, it all the dirt seemed to come back very quickly. I discovered that if I followed the acetone wash with a good quality wax sealer, the rail stayed clean for about a year. Furthermore, I could clean off the stains and dirt with a wet rag. I just finished the process for the second time. The rail looks like new. Remember, Acetone is highly volitile and needs to be used with considerable care.

Scrubbing Bubbles...

You guys gotta try this stuff, its incredible. If your rail is "black nasty" use the stuff with bleach and leave it on overnight. Spray again in the morning and brush. Be prepared to wash the boat and yourself cause that black crap will sling everwhere....rub rail will look like new again tho. Follow-up with 2001 protectant.

Sorry...yes, "Scrubbing Bubbles" is a product you can find at you supermarket in the bathroom cleaner section. It comes in a spray bottle. It is used for cleaning soap scum out of bathtubs and showers.
