I am getting my boat ready to launch for the Season. Any ideas on how best to clean the crustaceans off the boat's shaft and prop?

Polishing the shaft

I usually take a small hammer and bash the barnacles to pieces, once the majority of them has been knocked off i scrape them with a putty knife. Once they have been completely knocked off with just small little rings left go at it with a scotch brite pad and polish that shaft. For the prop, i usually take a 90 degree air die grinder with a roto zip pad on it and go at it to produce a real nice finish, don't go to deep or you could remove to much material in some area and cause the prop to go out of balance. All the best, good luck with it all.

When I finish cleaning the prop and shaft...

on our boat I wipe on two thick coats of Desitin or generic brand on all bright work below the waterline. Keeps marine critters away for at least a season on our boat, which is in salt water year around. Terry

if it was me

I think I would have cleaned the prop and shaft when the boat was pulled. Barnacles and other stuff is softer and easier to remove when fresh from the water. After sitting for a month or two they can be like concrete.

Propspeed

I would try Propspeed. It stops crustaceans and other nasties from getting a hold on the prop. It is a soft coating which does not let them get a grip and if they do they get flung off when the prop turns. It is not unusual down here to go 12 months with a clean prop using the stuff.

NICK- DO YOU HAVE A WEB SITE FOR PROPSPEED

Nick Is this a world-wide product or only available down under? Do they have a web site? For the first time I was stoped dead in the water by these little bugers when they coated my prop and shaft. Thanks Ian s/v Meant to Be
