The problem with being crazy is you don't actually realize you are in-fact crazy until you are elbow deep into the restoration.

At the time I found my boat I was mostly broke... that is broke enough not to be able to pony up $4k or better for a better boat, but able to scrape together a few hundred every other pay-day to buy just enough supplies and material to keep a project going. So I found an $800 boat that seemed like it wasn't too far gone to reasonably invest the sweat equity into a resto.

After I finished the blister repair/bottom job and the keel I looked at what was left to do, how much it was going to cost, and my ever pushing to the right launch date and said to myself "Dude, You're *explicative* Crazy..."
Hehe.. I've been there Luke.
Heck I'm currently there with $16,000 and countless hours put into an old truck that's not finished yet.
Am I crazy ? Probably.. :)

James,
Your last 2 posts in this thread are great.

I hope my post didn't come across as a naysayer.
Though.. the line " if you have cash to throw away..." doesn't match what my thoughts and intent were.
It should said " If you are willing to spend money and not care.."

The reality is, some people don't have the up front cash to get a boat in better condition, but have skills to fix a boat that has a cheaper initial price, but a higher overall price. Just like buying a house on payments vs cash. If they didn't buy the cheaper boat they would never be sailing. Unfortunately the cost is higher, for the same end result.

FWIW:
I did what you mention, with a collector's truck. As cash flow allowed, I fixed it up.
I have way more money in that truck than would be considered rational by most people

spartacus99: Simply based on your stated budget, and your desire to spend as much family time on the boat as possible, I still think it would make sense to find a better boat, and part out the older one. Or maybe find a good hull and use the trailer, mast, rigging, and other gear you already have from the original one.

Why the focus away from a swing keel ?

Cheers,
Roy

PS It's too bad you don't live nearby. If you do decide to cut out the liner, I'd love to help occasionally. It would make an interesting challenge. With time off on weekends for sailing. ;)

Swing keel because 1 extra maintenance. 2 because I want to sail in the Gulf with its deep blue and greens and not worry so much. 3 my current experience with it drives my desire for a fixed. The cable growl that I ve have to adjust for every time also drives me bombers and lastly
4 I slip my boat so simplicity is easier. Of I trailered it I would want a swing.

On the liner portion yeah... cut it out, reinforce the sides heavy rigging backing plates and sail to the yucatan

Sounds like the Pensacola to Isla Maharis (sp) run 600 NM. I did that some yrs ago with a H-30. I agree with you, when I lived on the Gulf Coast I had a fixed keel boat a 23 O' Day, slipped. That is a lot easier to go and come and shallow enough draft to not get in trouble. If I were you I'd just make your C-22 seaworthy and as nice as you can on a limited budget and work commitment. Use it to develop your and kids sailing skills. Put it on the market and or trade to a boat you want long term. I take your comment as "tongue in cheek" but if not if you want to take that run I'd say a 25 to 30 fixed keel would be better. I would NOT do the "cut out...reinforce" thing. Not sensible for a Gulf crossing cause you'll still have a costal cruiser with a 5 knt hull speed and limited load capacity.

Roy, you’re one of the more sensible and knowledgeable sailors on here. I was not at all bugged by anything you said. My skin is toughened by yrs of salt water and sun.

Just keep you eyes open and don't over commit you and the boat. stay sensible and safe.
You can pick up a good deal on a full keel Cape Dory 25 these days for a good price. I saw a good looking one go for $5k a couple of months ago. That boat would take you just about anywhere.

LOL.. Thanks for the compliment, but I can't say I agree with you. The more I sail, the less I feel that I know. In fact that's one of the attractions for me.

+1 for this.
Simply reinforcing a boat doesn't make it capable of use for which it wasn't designed.

That said, there was a guy who solo circumnavigated the Caribbean in a C22.
Picking the weather window, and knowing both yourself and your boat's limits, can go a long way to making that possible.

That said, it's not something I'd do. There are MUCH better boats for the task, that can be similar in price to a nice C22. Not just better for serious sailing, but more storage, more comfort.

If I was on the coast, I'd try find something like the Contessa 26. I'm somewhat of a sucker for more traditional boats.
There's a Contessa 26 currently for sale for the same $$ as I have into my C22.
For just $3,000 more than I have into my C22, there's a pristine Contessa 26 for sale in Kingston, Ontario right now with $35,000 worth of refit done, asking $9200 USD.
4ft draft and she could go almost anywhere.

Last sail before I deploy. We pulled the boat out of the slip and put her in storage. Family had a great time. Good solid steady wind. Man am I going to miss sailing while I'm gone. Keep posting sailing pics all so I can be envious! Would send pics of my own but app keeps crashing sooo..nope.

Work on boat likely begins when I return.

We bought an old boat that looked pretty good at first and soon discovered was nearly a wreck. After much discussion with the Admiral - we decided to restore it. It would cost more in the long run but less day to day. After 5 years and some regrets we are getting there. Completion of a project or a fix it is reason for celebration that gives us much satisfaction and pride. For example - the last 2 days I finally am to the point that we have repainted all of the deck non-skid after sailing ugly for a long time.

YMMV

That's quite a tribe of young 'uns you got there, Spartacus! Glad you got one last good sail in, in between all the T storms and what not.

So, which tropical paradise is Uncle Sugar sending you off to??

IMO there is something good to be said for fixing one up and sailing it as you do. that way is less impact on the living budget and cash flow. My mate and I have enjoyed sailing ours and working on it together as well.
congrads on the nonskid milestone. We have experienced the same pleasures "after ugly" lol.

Spartacus, I don't know how I missed before that you were active duty and you were deploying... I'm a Vet too and I feel blessed to be on the other side now as a Fed Civilian. I am poorer, but I should feel lucky I don't have to leave home anymore for long stretches, especially to the sand box.

You take care and keep us up to speed if you'll be able to get on-line. If you give us an address maybe a few of us will fire off a care-package with some sailing magazines and other goodies.

FYI... I know you have big plans for your C22 but keep this thought in the back of your mind. While you are deployed and banking some extra cash why not save as much as possible and think about a slightly bigger hull that will be a better candidate for the type of sailing you want to do?

I'll tell you what man, over the last 6 months of working on my resto I have coma across many boats for sale in the 25-27 foot range that were asking about the same price as I have invested in my C-22 and needed way less work!

Sailing magazines! Heck yes! Thanks for your service bud, can't wait till I don't have to leave home anymore too. ...except on a sailboat of course. ..with the family. The wife and I have been talking about a bigger boat and this might sound stupid but I kind of like the c22 community, good people who aren't afraid of doing insane level projects on their boat. If I drop 15k on a boat or more I'm going to be much more reticent about tinkering on it and with bigger boats come more systems and with more systems comes more time spent on those systems and less sailing. Plus slip fees. .. honestly I don't know at this point. All I know is that I really enjoy sailing; it's crazily similar to flying a plane and I want to do more of it. I'll have several months to think about it at least; )

I second the suggestion of magazines. I have a subscription to "good old boat" and I'd be more then willing to send some to you when I've read them.
