I usually consider taste in boat design--any architecture, really--to be strictly a matter of fashion. What we all think looks really great in 2004 will probably look dated and silly and 2014. As we were sailing in Long Island Sound on Saturday, we met a boat near Duck Island Roads that had those "classic" lines. Sweeping shear, overhangs, a noticable but not exaggerated tumblehome. At first I thought it was an 8 meter, but then I noticed it had a masthead rig. To tell the truth, it wasn't especially bristol. It could have used a good washing. But my wife, who doesn't know a yawl from a unicycle, took one look and said "what a beautiful boat." I had to admit, she was right.

I agree

I love the looks of the "classic" sailboat. I wish today's designers would add a little form over function, as they did years ago.

SCOTT MCCABE

GOOD DAY!

GOOD DAY! MY NAME IS SCOTT MCCABE, AND I LIVE IN FLORENCE OREGON. I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 16 FOOT SAILBOAT WITH MAIN SAIL PLUS JIB SAIL. I HAVE SAILED IT A DOZEN TIMES OR SO. I WANT TO POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF BOAT IT IS. I KNOW THAT IT IS 20 TO 30 YEARS OLD, AND SOMEONE FOUND ON THE INTERNET A TANZER 16 FOOT OVERNIGHTER THAT THEY FELT IT MIGHT BE. THE BOW HAS AN AREA TO SLEEP TWO. COULD SOME ONE GIVE ME SOME SORT OF IDEA AS TO HOW I CAN IDENTIFY MY SAIL BOAT? I COULD SEN DIGITAL PIX IF DESIRED LATER THIS WEEK. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE.
