Clanking noise coming from transmission

This just started; I have a 1989 Cat30 II when you put it in reverse it kind of vibrates a little, nosier then before. Also while sailing with the transmission in neutral you will hear the transmission turning over and making kind of a thumping sound with every revaluation of the prop. If I take and put it in to gear it will stop. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated thank you.

Check your zinc.

Sounds like your zinc is coming apart and striking the strut. You would think that it would just fall off, but I have seen them corroded to the shaft when one bolt separates and half is loose. Time for a swim.

reverse under sail

Just about everything i have read says to put the tranny in reverse while sailing. The reason behind this is because the gears dont pick up fluid to lube the thing while freewheeling.Stopping the tranny from moving doesnt really slow you down as much as you think, if you have the 2 blade prop cole
