A couple of summers ago we were doing a delivery through NY Harbor when a cruise ship came up behind us. Quite impressive, I don't think our masthead was up to the lower portholes. We stayed out of their way.

It's my understanding that the biggest ships being built today are the cruise ships. Bigger than any military ships. When I think about how big aircraft carriers are, that seems amazing.

That was the Caribbean Princess and they would shuttle people to the beach amid umbrellas, tents, and water toys. We saw another on Little San Salvidor doing the same.

The biggest cruise ships now have about double the displacement of a Nimitz class carrier.

Crossing the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas a week or so ago in the dark we had two withing 1/2 mile and I talked to both on the radio and changed course some for the second. Lots of big cargo and tankers were out there also. Also had to change course for a larger tanker. A busy 4 hours during the time it took to cross the shipping lane on the east side of the Stream,

I have not seen a 2019 port schedule, but in season there are at least one cruises that leaves either a Saturday or Sunday morning out of Baltimore. The hospital ship used to be based in Baltimore, but I think it is out of FL somewhere, closer to where it is more likely to be needed. And does not need to be winterized!

With all that windage I'm not that surprised that a 100 mph + gust pushed one of them over far enough to have injuries and make the news not far out from NYC.

The video isn't that dramatic. I love the two guys at the bar who seem pretty oblivious to the "Mayhem."

I hate these things. You pull into some quaint seaside port in the Greek islands, all calm and peaceful. Next thing you know, one of these monsters steams in an dumps 3000 baseball hat wearing doofuses onto your lap. Stopover ruined.

Glad I got to see Santorini long before all the big cruise ships came onto the market and found their way there.
Was in Bermuda recently, It wasn’t too bad until 3 of those white monsters arrived at the same time and dumped 15000 of my no so close friends onto the island.

I hate them as well but, although it may negatively effect your visit, the 3000 doofuses boost the local economy. Santorini is doing quite well as a result.

It does, but not as straightforward as you might think. There ends up being a huge imbalance of services, because the tourist economy on the islands were geared around people not just coming in and having a beer, but arriving by ferry, spending nights and having dinner. All these people go back to the boat at night.
