Let's qualify that just a bit just to avoid any confusion. The designer was Halsey Herreshof. The 22 & 26 are both Herreshof design
Hi Ralph, is there faceplates on the C26 swing keel ? mine looks like it has a pin inside of a iron fitting so i dont see plates.
I have purchased a 1978 Chrysler 26' swing keel
and the first time we took her out , I have hit some shallow ground
only sand , but in wisdom I have tried to crank up the keel to
get free , and when I cranked it a couple of times , I felt a pop like something got loose or jumped off , the rails ,
Does anybody know if I can fix that while she is still in the water
or do I have get her out , the keel is all the way down now , and the crank feels , just free, I have not opened up the cover yet , to inspect
wondering if anybody has any ideas ,
thanks
ThanksBeen there........
Sounds like you snapped the control cable or the shackle that connects it to the keel. If it's just the fitting, you could probably dive on it and replace. If it's the cable, then it's half the job inside the boat pulling out the old cable and re-threading a new one. Then, diving to connect it to the keel.
It is much easier if you haul it out or find a sand bar to lay over on at low tide.
Good luck either way.
Yes we are enjoying our boat a lot, It is a much heavier boat than I am used to. I have not yet seen how well she will do in strong winds and rough weather .777, I've sailed against a Chry 26 2 times in very heavy weather and had a ball. I could not gain an inch nor could he. Both time we sailed together for a little over an hour. He'd lead then I'd lead. Wow, great way to spend a day. He and I have never met but that's just a reason to sail tomorrow.
Now let's get serious. I have owned 5 centerboard boats. Two were weighted centerboards and 3 were simply centerboards and did nothing for ballast. Centerboards are looking for reasons to fail. As you have seen on this site there are many questions about them and tales of woe about the failure of the c/b. Make sure NOW that your board, winch, cable and hinge pin are in very good repair and then check it every year. If you leave the boat in the water at a slip or mooring raise the board to stop pin wear. If you are worried about the cable breaking while doing this then replace the cable. Simple. Enjoy your boat. I know a sailor out here that really enjoys his.

Glad to hear that he did a full restore , It's our first season with this boat , and it can use some TLC , and we are trying to decide if its worth the time and money to do a full restore or , save the money for a nice boat , and just keep sailing this one in the meaning while .I raced and day sailed on a friend's 26 and really enjoyed the boat. Very solid. The only real issue I can remember is the rudder shaft bent and we had to limp in after a race. He decided to do a full restoration and it turned out great. The bent rudder shaft was hollow tubing and he did change that out to a solid rudder shaft. We could never confirm if the hollow rudder shaft was OEM or a repair by a previous owner. I think we replaced the centerboard cable and pin once in the ten years he owned the boat.
