Now that I have a problem, I find that I have mis-placed the forum address for Chrysler owners. Would someone be kind enough to give it to me, or possibly answer the question right away? ....What is my swing keel made of? Is it cast or forged iron? I need to do a welding job to fill in the elongated Pin Hole and need to know the material. The original Chrysler web-site has the specs, but not the materials. Thanks to anyone who can help. Happy Sailing.

Cast Iron

Iron is too brittle (high carbon content) and has no elasticity to be able to forge. You must be thinking of wrought iron. It is also not wrought iron. Wrought iron is steel. It is cast iron. You would be better served to braze the hole in the keel or fill it with an epoxy. Cast iron, due to its porosity and brittle characteristics does not weld well. Jim

Go to the local machine shop.

Have your centerboard drilled out and have the shop install a bushing to fit the spec.s required. This is a very simple repair and not too expensive. It is also a permanent repair. Ray

Swing Keel

I replaced the keel pin and bracket on my Chrysler 22 several years ago. The keel is made out of cast iron and weighs 725 pounds. I didn't weigh it, but, there are several different weights listed in articles and specifications. I replaced the bracket and pin with stainless steel. I had a machine shop do the work. It cost $450 for the bracket. It is quite a job to replace it. Unless you are set up to handle 725 pounds and reasonable competent to do the work, I suggest that you have a yard do it for you. That would usually mean that the job would cost more than the boat. Go to www.cashflowfactory.com/keelrepair/index.html for an article on the replacement of the brackets exactly like yours. You can also e-mail me for more info. Good luck, Richard

MANY THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S HELP...

Hi Richard, Many thanks for your reply. Yesterday was a "fun" day. I replaced the Pin Mounting plates and then spent about a half hour with a welder discussing the options. He too advised against attempting to weld-fill the elongated hole, in that it would have to be done in a shop and it's not cheap. This is due to all of the additional labor involved in heating the iron and maintaining the heat 24 hours after the weld. based on the fact that the wear took 28 years to reach this point, and that the heaviest part of the keel is in the elongation's path; it would probably take 40 years or better to move another 3". He advised against brazing for this appllication, for several reasons and we all decided to put the keel back up and call it a day. Hopefully, the only leak I had was from the Pin Brackets....which have now been removed, cleaned meticulously and re-installed with lots of 5200. Happy Sailing, Ralp
