My 1984 H'31 has a problem with the turn off choke sticking. It has become very difficult to pull the knob out in order to turn off the engine. Should I replace the entire cable assembly, and where can I get that part? In the process of using this sticky cable last year, I broke the engine instrument panel. It is a black plastic panel in the cockpit and holds the tachometer, key, and panel light switches. Where would I go for a replacement for this? Thanks for your help in advance, Eric Steege "Perfect Union", 1984 H'31 Bayport, MN

fuel shut-off

The engine stop cable is a fuel shut-off. They have a tendency to freeze up unless they are lube regularly. Assuming its a Yanmar, both parts are available from Yanmar Direct/Torresen Marine www.torresen.com

Same problem different day.

Eric: I had the exact same problem. I replace the cable and placed in down below on the top of the engine box. This makes for a much shorter run and a cable that stays out of the elements. We no longer can shut the engine down from the cockpit. This give us slight bit of security when we are in a foreign port (any other harbor). We just pull the fuel shut off out when we leave the boat. They cannot start it even if they mess with the ignition. It is also one less thing that visitors need to worry about breaking/bending. We used a high quality Morse cable and an angle bracket down below.

Thanks for the responses

I will be buying the parts and replacing the cable back to the original location. Thanks you, Eric Steege "Perfect Union", 1984 Hunter 31 Bayport, MN

Before you buy......

Our 84 H31 did the same thing. Upon close inspection,I noticed the cable was up against the exhaust and had melted part of the plastic cover. I re-routed the cable and secured it with a nylon zip tie. Now it doesn't stick any more. Hope you are as lucky, Bob S/V Lady Di II
