Last month I asked about how people evaluate the severity of bottom paint issues. The consensus seemed to be that my own chipped bottom was due to amine blush. I meant to post pictures then, but didn't get around to it until now. So again, it's Micron CSC Biolux over Interprotect 2000. Would you say that this is a scrape and touch up job, or signs of a major project about to happen? How do you personally go about making such decisions?

One clue might be the color of the barrier coat - is it the same as what you see on the hull where it peeled Phil? If you are seeing the barrier coat, it's obviously just a bad spot(s) where the paint didn't adhere. If the barrier coat has peeled too and the hull is exposed, get out the sandpaper. If I took pics of my keel (which is raw lead), you'd see the same thing so it may not be amine residue. I'd just lightly scrape and sand the loose areas and start over (unless you race??).

Here's another spot, near the rudder. This is only my first winter with the boat, so I'm not sure what color(s) the barrier coat(s) is(are). In any case, this spot is not down to glass. It's hard to determine the color under the chips I haven't picked at yet, but my recollection is that they are similar. It had been on the hard for ~18mo when we bought her, and no signs of these chips and cracks. Color would be a great diagnostic if you were confident of the paint history. If you're taking it down to glass, you could read the story of the hull like peeling layers of paper off the walls of an old house (been there, done that). I guess I haven't been around and seen enough paints in various stages of decrepitude to trust that I know what I'm looking at. I'm fishing for those kind of clues.

I am not sure about the skeg, but I would look at that and make sure that is tight (on many models they are bolted inside and then glassed in. I am curious as to the cracking. From another poster I would see if you are through the barrier coat to the hull, and if so just re-apply the interprotect on that spot after sanding and cleaning with solvent. Then re-paint in the spring.
Given the lack of history, why not strip the open areas down to the gel during which time you'll see the layers, be able to tell where the barrier coat ends and decide from there how best to remedy the paint? Boat bottoms and houses are not that different when it comes to making paint stay where you want.
