Folks, I'm planning to trailer my 85 H23 down from LI New York to the north Chesapeake Bay for a few day cruise. Does anyone know of a good ramp that I can use to launch my H23 in Cecil County? I'm thinking the Elk Neck River state park. I don't know if the ramp is long or deep enough to accomodate the 2.5ft draft. Also, what will be the rough cost for use of the ramp. Thanks in advance, Chuck S/V Windsongs 85 H23

Sandy Point State Park at the Bay Bridge

Best place I've ever seen!! 22 ramps finger piers, on weekends during season it is only $4 a person nothing extra for the boat. I launched there for 14 years. You can go to the marina and tell them you will be gone for a few days. They take the information give you a hanger tag for the vehicle, tell you were to park near the ranger's house and he watches things.. You're 5-7 miles north of Annapolis, 10 nm to Rock Hall, a nice day sail to St Michaels probably 15nm to inner harbor at Baltimore. Picture is of Java at Sandy Point. GREAT LOCATION. Jim S/V Java

Sounds great! anything north?

Jim, Thanks, it sounds great! I'm trailering from the Pottstown Pennsylvania area and my wife wanted a shorter drive, that's why I was concentrating on the northern end of the bay. Anything north?? /Chuck S/V Windsongs H23

Chesapeake Bay Cruising Guide

May I suggest you check out a copy of 'Guide to Cruising the Chesapeake Bay'. You will not only find a listing of all Marinas and their services, including launch ramp facilities, but also detailed info on cruising locations, points of interest, restaurants, etc. There are launch ramps listed at Tidewater Marina and Havre de Grace City Yacht Basin in Havre de Grace; Anchor Marina and Bay Boat Works in Northeast River. This is a great way to plan your trips, with phone numbers to check local contacts, etc. I keep one on the boat and another at home.

There are a number of good launch ramps

closer to the north, 1. Summit Bridge Marina on the C&D Canal. It's about 12 miles to the Chesapeake and 6 miles to the Delaware River. 2. The Skip Jack Marina onthe Sassafrass River off Route 213 in Maryland. Also, Sailing Associates is just next door. 4. Tidewaters Martina at Havre' de Grace in Maryland just south of Route 95 whene you cross the Susquehanna River. 5. There are several marinas onthe Bohemia River just west of Route 213 in Maryland. I'm not sure what the fees are but most are $10 or so unless you want to use a sling, etc. If you plan to stay for a day or two, I'd go for Skipjack because it has all the amenities, pool, showers, resturant nearby, etc. This also applies to the Summit Bridge Marina but it's a bit of motoring on the canal before you can raise the sails. Good luck Hayden hayden_jones@renolan.com

Thanks All!

You've given me some great tips to start out my search. My only concern is if I get to one of these ramps and it's not deep enough for an H23. Normally most ramps up in NY are deep and long enough to get the boat in with either a trailer extension or chains. /Chuck S/V Windsongs H23
