Hi all, Heading to Oxford, MD for the weekend for the first time, and looking at the charts for Knapps - it looks tight with max 6-6.5 ft and low tide tomorrow is mid afternoon. So, question is can I use the narrows with a 5 1/2 foot draft at 4ish tomorrow - any comments would be greatly appreciated. Right now I am thinking of going the long way around which is only about 4 miles extra? Thoughts & safe travels all, ed

Slim water on the river side

Hey Ed, Make sure if you go through there that you read the cruising guide about the river side- it's a little tricky otherwise. They just dredged the bay channel a couple of years ago, so you'll be fine there. Beautiful area. B

I went thru

Knapps Narrows about 6 weeks ago with no problems. However, my boat only draws 4 ft and my depth sounder never went below 6 ft. I don't recall what the tide was. Also, be careful of the current in or around the bridge and call the bridge tender just as you are entering the narrows to request an opening. My recommendation would be to try to plan your passage thru the narrows at or near high tide and keep a close look at your depth sounder, which will help tell you what you need to know for your return trip.

Thanks - decision made

Thanks Bill & Warren, I did call the bridge earlier (they have 15 feet right there @ about the same time I would be there tomorrow - phone 410-886-2588 in case anybody needs it). But based on the timing, ie low tide (I think) I have decided to go around rather than aground! Thanks - have a great 4th!

Good decision

Ed, The last time we went through we were fine, but a relatively small sailboat traveling in the opposite direction ran aground mid-channel and was rammed by a boat behind it. I doubt it drew more than 4 feet. Consequently, I don't think I'll be going through again. Harry Bethesda, MD Hunter 456 - "Czech Mate"
