I have been looking for the right H37C for about 2 years. I now have the opportunity to buy one for next to nothing. The kicker is: The rudder is bent, shaft is bent, shaft stabilizer is missing. Among other minor things these seem to be the subject of interest. I have access to expert fiberglass repair and some mechanical repair. Machine work for shafts and rudder posts will take some looking into. My question is what would I be looking at as fars as repairs of that nature? Leave the boat at a dead run? Is it possible I could get through something like this for less than $10,000? Please any input would be appreciated.

The rudder alone will be about $3000 to $4000. The strut would almost certainly have to be fabricated.

I can't really tell from the pics if the rudder or just the post is bent. I assume that they are two seperate pieces?.

I don't know about the rudder but I recently bought a 27' hunter and had to replace the strut and fix the shaft. I had a local welding shop that does marine work make a stainless steel strut for $300. I had my shaft bent back since it was only slightly bent but before I did that I found a place near me to get a new shaft for about $375. Also check out marine hardware they do bronze casted struts for about 600.00. They were the only ones I found that could make a new bronze strut for me the right size and shape.

I put a new rudder on Midnight Sun last year. Foss Foam was the original manufacture and still has the molds. $1600.00 cash.

Any idea what caused such severe damage to rudder/post/strut? From your picture, the rest of the hull looks fine. But what else might there be from the same incident, or anything else. Don't hold back communicating about your itemized list of concerns. The Cherubini H37 owners on this forum know a lot!

Wish that I had the opportunity to locate a wonderful but somewhat compromised boat for next to nothing. But on the other hand, here in the SF Bay area locations that will permit significant repairs on a DIY basis are getting scarce.

The damage on this boat is from Hurricane Katrina. It has superficial fiberglass damage on the port side and had some water/leakage in the cabin. I have access to expert fiberglass repair at cost so the cosmetics is of no concern to me. I have a trip planned to get a more detailed look at the boat in about a week to get the just of things. As far as I can tell, these are the only major concerns I have as I am handy at most everything topside. It's just that the opportunity to get the title to a Cherubini hull has my head spinning and I want to make this work. At the same rate, I know that if anyone knows anything about this it is here on this site.

Before I take a swag at the costs here are my concerns:
1) the rudder goes up through a tube that could have been damaged. Just a hard grounding will crack the fiberglass back there. The tube needs to be checked both inside and outside. I'll attach a picture or two that might help.
2) there could be damage where the shaft strut attaches. You see the inside through an inspection port on the shelf behind the engine. It is behind the water heater if the boat still has a water heater.
3) Carefully check the hull to keel joint. If the boat bounced around on the keel there could be problems.
As for costs. The price Blaise quoted for a new rudder beats the repair on mine. The stainless post goes about 2/3rds of the way into the rudder. It has a large plate welded to it. I had mine completely rebuilt after having it straightened. Luckily insurance paid. Shaft and strut probably around $600. If you need an engine add another $7000. to $8000. Then the other damage. I would walk away from a boat with hull to keel damage. Hope this is helpful.

be sure to concider all the costs youcanestimate.
new rudder is a given, the shaft is integral to the rudder as described above. the shaft and strut can be priced by calling a prop shop for an estimate. The next biggest question is the engine.

With an older boat you will alsohave to look at other things that need to be done. and a complete bottom job.

I would ask for a survey. Surelyone has been done on the boat. Probably it was not repaired by now because of what a surveyor said to the insurance company.

that gives you a starting point.and a list of things you would need to do.

If you have access to people to do work, a place to do it without a big yard bill, the engine is ok. the rest of the boat is ok there is a chance to make out ok.

Keep in mind that these are great boats, but they are not expensive boats.
I had a lot more in mine after i rebuild it than i can ever get out.

Get lots of opinions. get an estimate tohave it done in a yard and compare it tothe value of the boat. Then figure out what you can save by doing it yourself.
I would add about twice what you think things will cost to get it in shape.

dont forget loading transporting, launching, bottom paint and so on

Good luck.
wish i still had mine.

skipper-wannabe,
If you look and decide you don't want to go that route, would appreciate knowing the wherabouts of it. Always looking for spareparts and such for mine. The older they get the harder to find parts. Have fun with it if you do.

If you are single and handy, go for it. One year should do it. If you have a wife and a familly, it will take 2 years, a shop full of tools nearby, losts of drive and determination and 20K +. This job is not for the easy to distract. But you will have a great boat and great satisfaction.

Remember, there is a fine line between having a great boat or week end escape and a stone around your neck that you cannot shed fast enought.

Marinas are full of abandoned boats in disrepair that people no longer care to visit or keep.

My ongoing gut job tally is a follows:
7K for my boat.
2K shipping and set up.
6K in parts and materials so far.
2K in occasional help.
6K left in the budget.

I would do it again in a heart beat. The most rewarding thing I have done in a while. I consider it cheap therapy. Has allowed my to go through my worst economic situation in my 42 years in the U.S. I see the light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully there will also be a splashdown in it.
