I have just had an upholstery shop redo the helmsman seat cushion for my 33 and decided it would be nice to have a matching seat back that would be fixed to the aft rail. While at it I got the idea to jazz it up with an embroidered Cheriubini emblem. Of course, there is no Cherubini emblem, so I decided to make one. If you look at one of the old Hunter brochures you will see the old Hunter logo, which is basically the word Hunter between some lines with a picture of a boat and the word hunter again as the main sail. I have substituted the first word Hunter for a script word Cherubini. There is a link where you can view a rough drawing at http://www.safes.com/don.gif I am very excited with the final results, as I, like most of us, am proud of my boat's heritage and I think dislaying it in this way adds a touch of class. I am going to explore having this emblem done on shirts, wind breakers, etc. I will post a picture of the cushion as soon as I can. Nice job with the logo. My H37C has the original Hunter part of that logo at the aft end of the striping. Looks as good as new and is one reason I have not replaced the striping. I'll be interested in doing a sweatshirt and hat, maybe some T-shirts. How do I get past the copyright?

Hunter is a word...and Cherubini...I don't know. It's a family name, and a designers name, but is it copyrighted as a brand name? It has been used as a description many times for boats designed by Cherubini, no matter the builder. I wouldn't worry to much about the copyright. I like the design, and may be interested in a shirt, tee, maybe even a decal for my boat side (although you may not want the design on my old boat yet).

I would VERY STRONGLY caution anyone with plans to market the name, artwork, depictions of members, or other products belonging to the family. People's names and reputations get cheapened when they become too diffuse (vis. Tommy Hilfiger, who once made top-notch skiing gear). If there is any doubt, it should be assumed that for-profit activities (as defined by law, NOT an individual's perception) conspicuously utilising the Cherubini name in any yachting-related field are the sole province of the family and should NOT be used without express written (hard-copy) agreement. I like you guys-- but I think this ought to have gone without saying. All that said-- I think it might be nice for owners of older Hunters to perhaps reproduce for their own boats the red-white-blue sailboat logo that once appeared as a sticker on the port quarter (it only looked right going one way). I have both the bird from my dad's own business cards and I think I may also have the original artwork (which my dad designed) for the little sailboat stickers from the early Hunters, the one that only works on the port side! (--it wasn't intended for the side of the boat-- why did they use it there? --same reason the windows on the 27 don't match-- don't get me started!) There may also be the C-44 emblem we designed (which almost never got used). I am also working on a flagpole holder for the stern ensign that incorporates a kind of logo as well. People interested in 'authentic' Cherubini artwork can EMail me after the first of the year (when I have my head back together), and I'll see if I can provide anything that can make it onto cushions, seat covers, yacht gear bags, etc., as people like.
