Curious to know if anyone has done distance sailing on a small boat particularly a Hunter 25.

I have a Hunter 25 1976 in good condition that I have only sailed 20 miles in distance at one time. I'm interested in sailing her from Buzzards Bay to the tip of L.I. (Montauk) this summer and wonder if the 25 is a reasonably stable vessel to sail 70 along the coast in.

Any thoughts appreciated.

No Problem

Not a problem, We do it regularly.
You just need time and reasonable weather, you can break the trip up in Newport RI or Point Judith RI and then hop over to Block Island and then to Montauk.

We have an 81 H33 and motor sail the 50 NM from New London Ct to Cuttyhunk in one shot, so a two day trip in your boat should be fun.

There are not many 25s more solid than your '76 Hunter. So I am curious as to why you ask the question. Are you anticipating worse conditions than you are used to? Or is it something else?

Made that run in a 22 I would not see why not. Check out archives for Boat Babe.

Distance sailing

Thanks for your response, I realize my vessel albeit small is a solid somewhat overbuilt boat however she is indeed a small vessel and though transats are sailing 21 footers across the Atlantic; this would be my longest sailing endeavor.

When this model was new a guy bought one, installed an inboard (undoubtedly for the ability to generate power) and set off across the Atlantic in it. I don't know what happened to him but I don't think there was any tragedy.

The boat is very stable, mainly by design; but in installing the holding tank in Diana I beefed up the inside of the hull under the v-berth with a couple extra layers of 'glass. I couldn't see why not-- the through-hull cut-outs were less than 3/8" there. Now it's more like 1/2". Still the factory-stock hull is more rugged than most of what you see now.

In preparation for going south I am also upgrading components including 5/32" rigging wire, redesigned & stronger chainplates (SS angle iron with welded gussets), new mast step, split backstay & adjuster, and G-10 backing plates for the keelbolts. If I'm spending any serious time on this boat it's gotta to be reliable.

Good luck on your endeavors.
