Cheoy Lee???

Im a noob to the sailing world but in looking online at used boats. Choey lee is a brand that seems to command a good resale even for older models. extensive use of wood may be part of it, but was it good hull construction or is it a cult society of enthusists? Whats the history on this brand? and why are they loved by some so much?

In a nutshell it is SPECIFIC Cheoys that are 'loved' In the Chinese heyday when many yachts were being built in Hong Kong and Formosa they would be jobbed out to differnt sub-contractors, different yars etc. Almost every contemporary boat designer had a plan or two in the mix.The trick was to match the design to a specific time and place where main yard and subs all did a good job. A tricky proposition!

I saw a 69' 27foot like yours for $5000. the blue book has them avg 13000 for that model, seems in fair to good condition. would you buy?

It might be worth $5,000

An offshore 27 that is ready to sail and has no big problems is worth 13k. But if there is no engine or if it's unrepairable, or if it has no mast or rigging, then it's not worth $13,000 It might be worth something to someone restoring one, for the parts. A heavily weathered mast might be a lost cause. If the engine is seized or is missing parts it may be unrepairable. Here's a link to my "project boat"
