I finally got to use my Chene anchor with my H216 and I am pretty pleased. I normally sail in Lake Oroville in Upstate California which is 850' deep so anchoring is seldom done...I figure carrying the rode necessary for this depth would swamp my H216...plus I could drop anchor at one end of the lake and wash ashore on the other end as I let the rode out and never get it set. ;-) I was committee boat for a cat race at Black Butte Lake this last weekend and finally anchored for the first time. I use my H216 as a day sailer so my criteria were: 1. Doesn't have to hold in a 40k wind. 2. Light. 3. Minimum scope. 4. Easy to set. 5. Easy to retrieve. 6. Use in sand or mud bottom...sometimes grass. 7. Small. I bought a Wal-Mart Chene anchor that was one boat size up. Chene advertises a 2:1 rode w/no chain (yeah...right...but maybe?) and easy retrieval. I anchored in 40' depth with mud bottom. I had to learn how to set it...you have to dangle it as if it is ready to set, back up, and lower it. If you can dangle it like you just retrieved it, it will never set. Plus you have to make sure it is rotated in the correct direction when it hits bottom...therefore lowering it while backing off makes sens. Regardless, once I figured it out, I was satisfied. I anchored with 150' of nylon rode (no chain...Chene advertises no chain required). I chose 150' as that was as much rode as I had...very scientific. This gave me a 3.75:1 ratio. I backed off hard and it set like a rock. Wind was about 10-12 mph and clocked 90 degrees while I was anchored. The Chene seemed to hold well in these conditions. With Upstate California lake sailing, waves get gigantic...sometimes up to 6" or so...that it, waves are no problem for my usage. Pulling the anchor up was a dream. I motored in front of the anchor while retrieving the rode. Once on the other side with the rode taunt, I simply slacked off, pulled again and the anchor pulled out backwards slicker than snot on a doorknob. Summary: 1. I would be nervous about purchasing the Chene as a serious anchor without a lot more testing. 2. For my intended usage, I am quite pleased. 3. The anchor is definitely small and light with no chain required. 3. I would buy it again.
