Why buy a shiny nice sailboat when I might sail into something right?
Only the idiots ruin a boat. Sure, in just starting out you may bump the dock or bump another boat, but most of that doesn't cause any damage and any damage that does happen is repairable beyond future notice and boat is like new again.

It's the people who just can't get it, which is a low percentage, who have major problems and they are usually powerboaters (not including the guys who want to take off sailing non-stop around the world and try going around Cape Horn).

So don't be afraid of buying a boat too good because you think you will tear it up. As you will soon learn, everything on boats break and you will either learn how to repair them youself or go bankrupt ...or both :)
