The HIN
or Hull Identification Number will tell you the production year of the boat and the hull S/N. As far as a "history" of the boat, probably not. If the boat manufacture is still in business, they might have a few more details as to where to boat was sold and possibly who the first owner was. If the manufacture is out of business then I doubt you will find much info. Good luck

If you have a Catalina..........
If you have a Catalina, it might be easy to check the history ....if you are lucky. Catalina owners have a website where many owners have voluntarily listed. You look it up by HIN no. or Hull No. My Catalina 30 was totaled in Katrina, but still floating and in very good shape. I updated the info on the Catalina site, so I can be contacted by its new owner. Some other sites have similar info. I currently own an Allied, and there sites are pretty good about that also. Your old title
Just as with cars, your copy of the previous title (if you live in a state that requires them for boats) can get you back to a previous owner and accompanying paperwork may get you back to a boat or yacht dealer. '68 is a stretch, but for the many of us whose boats go back to the '80's there may only have been one or two previous owners and finding one gets you the other.
