Check your axles…… Don’t be like me

I spent the better part of 2020 rebuilding my catalina. Went over every nut and bolt rigging etc. when I purchased it as part of the sale I asked if the owner could have new tires installed at my expense. He ended up replacing the hubs too. Needless to say I felt pretty secure. This week was supposed to be first sail of the season. Instead it was a lesson in axle replacement! Yes I inspected the axle it was rusty but sounded solid, and to be honest just wasn’t sexy enough to deal with while refitting the boat $500 for a axle or $500 for a chart plotter etc, so it kept getting pushed back. I am pulling out of the neighborhood (thank god all low speed) and notice the tires are splayed out like a tricked out Honda Civic lowered and. not perpendicular to the road. I pull over and see my axle is in V. I don’t even want to think about what could have happened at highway speed. So don’t be like me, if you trailer make sure your trailer is sound and ready to do the job. Not just the bearing buddies, everything, and when in doubt replace em. Might save your boat from sitting on the highway…….7A0C02C9-F508-479E-A9A5-15673D72F66B.jpeg CF572612-2081-43B2-BD4E-EEFE819292CC.jpeg EEDEAE0A-66B3-40EE-A064-F055857EA9F0.jpeg

Man that is terrifying to think about. Where do you get an axle and new struts?

Dang! Glad you caught that early-- for others who may be contemplating more road miles, consider upgrading to a #3500 lb Axle (stock is 2500) and D rated tires. Our loaded boats are typically sitting at or over the axle rating before the 40+ years of wear and tear are factored in.

I just assumed #3500 when spec’ing the new axle I wish they had a drop axle I roll on 15” wheels and with a straight axle I need to use the extension to launch, ah well it worked for 30+ yrs.

Noticed you didn't have the stock sail rite trailer-- which is potentially a good thing. I'm jealous of anyone with a galvanized frame.

Good and bad, the boat sits high on the trailer as all the cross beams are level with the side rails the keel sits on a “walking board” rather than a roller or v bumper. I need to use the extension to launch, but my rear tires rarely get wet….

Glad to hear everything came out OK. I smoked a hub/bearings the first time I was going to go out and it ended up making me replace both hubs/bearings/races etc.. So far, the drop axle on my trailer is doing ok but I am so tempted next time I get some boat bucks accrued to order a new drop axle and springs from Champion Trailers in Slidell, LA.
