I was lucky, we had just completed a 240 mile trip, and I had been checked engine oil, coolant etc. every day - day after completing the trip I check the engine and found about (3) cups of engine coolant/antifreeze in the engine bildge and nothing in the coolant reservoir! Checked the engine oil - no water - good, everything else seemed fine,... later I checked the drain cocks used to drain engine coolant from the raw and fresh water systems. The cock for the fresh water had a plastic screw that pretty much fell out into my hand!

The engine is a Yanmar 2GM20F (1989 ).

I called around and learned the plastic drain cocks had been replaced with brass units, and I should replace both drain cocks.

Of course, I am replacing them, but it might have been rough to have that valve fail at some point when I might really need the engine.

Just a thought if you have an older Yanmar, check to see if the drain cocks have a black plastic plug/screw in them. Might be time to upgrade.
