Still not finished but thought I would snap a few pics. I am very pleased with the results although if I did it again I would do a much better job due to "lessons learned". The sole is made up of 4" x 36" vinyl self stick maple planks that I bought at Lowes. I cut each in half to create the 2" wide planks. The holly part is actually GE premium silicon in almond color. I first did the bilge cover over a year ago to see how it would hold up. The plank stayed firm and the silicon worked perfectly. I need to replace the bilge cover metal trim lip. The PO put that one on and doesn't quite fit right. The substrate was gelcoated fiberglass that was under the original teak and holly plywood. The PO removed the plywood and just painted the fiberglass. I took a disc sander and sanded off the paint, cleaned it good with Dawn and wiped it down with acetone before applying the strips. Those tiles are very, very sticky so they stuck great.

That looks fine, Kito.. How did you get the silicone so flat and sharp?

I think it looks great. Would also like to know how you got the silicone to lay flat. How thick is the laminate?

Looks great. Is it slippery when wet?
I think when my floor goes I may do something like that.

The planks are only about 3/32" thick which is another plus. At 6'5", I need all the headroom I can get. I laid the planks first and then just ran a bead of silicon in the space between them and then ran a thin metal blade putty knife over each seam. It flatten out nice and smooth with the top. Any excess residue on the vinyl is easily removed after it dries since silicone doesn't stick as good to the vinyl.....it just rubs right off. I got this idea after seeing how a vinyl teak and holly manufacturer made sheets of their sole material. They used vinyl for the planks and silicon for the holly. I walked on it with bare feet and wasn't slippery. I haven't tried it with wet feet though. I was thinking the silicone would actually act like a anti-slip.

Dang Son! That is out of the box thinking right there, and excellent results. If you had put this in the Stingy Sailor DIY contest, you would have won hands down.... I'm going to Lowes.com right now, LOL!

Nice job! I did the same thing, but used thin strips of a lighter colored vinyl for the holly. Sorry the lobster tails and champagne are in the way.

As far as slippery - the stuff I used has a faux wood grain texture built into it, so its actually reasonably not slippery when wet.

Thanks CloudDiver. At the time Lowes had the 4 x 36 planks in teak but I liked the maple better. I am not sure they carry the 4" wide anymore. It was a little tedious slicing those 4" planks in half though.

Looks great!. I actually thought about cutting thin strips of vinyl for the holly but was afraid of the thin strips pulling up. I guess it worked out for you ok. I like the silicone since for one, it's easier and two, it helps keep the vinyl planks from ever coming up since it seals any water from getting under it.

Nice job! I need to re-lay the floor in my H34 in the galley/step down area. What is the brand of flooring you used- Lowes here in Canada carries different brands than in US. Thanks

I bought mine over a year ago so not sure the brand name. It looks like Lowes does not carry the 4" wide planks anymore. I guess you could buy 6" and cut it twice.

That looks fantastic. I've been thinking of doing that exact thing with ripping thin vinyl for the 'holly' (like on the lobster/champagne pic). But after seeing this the caulk looks better because it dresses up the interface between the floor and the sides really well.

Anybody worry that the caulk will hold/attract dirt?

Thanks for the post.

If I would have cut thin strips for the holly, mine would have looked horrible since I tend to not cut straight ;) I would have had some nasty gaps. The trick with the silicone is to fill the gap just right so when you run the blade over it just leaves a thin film on the vinyl. I first made the mistake of running the blade over it too much trying to get it perfect. The silicone I used seemed to set up fast especially when it's 98 degrees out. Messing with it after the silicone starts to dry makes it lumpy. you can always touch up later after it dries. As far as dirt, the bilge cover was done over a year ago and the silicone did get dirty but cleaned up nice. The picture shows that the silicone on the cover is pretty much the same color as the new floor I just put in.

The stuff does split well. I used a looooong metal straight edge and a scoring tool, and then split it down the score. If youre trying to match the exact dimensions of teak and holly, using caulk is the way to go. I was not convinced I could split the lighter vinyl into strips as thin as traditional holly strips.

I also just applied mine on top of the flooring that was there after giving it a good surface prep. As Kito said, the flooring is extremely sticky.

What did you use as a spacer to create reproducible and even gaps for the caulk between the strips?

It looks like Lowes still sells a few "species" in 4" widths, but they are all versions of oak, so the grain would be more prominent that I would like. The maple is beautiful Kito, great job.

I have done some looking, Kito, for self stick flooring in plank form and seem to only be able to find the type with the adhesive flaps on the side and end. Am I correct in assuming the flooring you used had adhesive already applied over the whole surface protected by some sort of backing paper/film that was peeled off after cutting?

Kito, I just got back from Lowes, I found the planks for .98 each so I got 20 planks. I should be able to do mine for around $30 total.

What a great idea. I did that to an old RV with great results. Never ocurred to me for my boat.
