I have a cracked block-any used ones out there? Should I rebuild with a factory block-approx cost 5k. Should I buy new engine-approx 7k. Should I drop a less exp inboard diesel that would fit on same mounts? Thanks for your help. fred@bigredheart.com

My thoughts, Fred..

..is that an engine swap will negatively affect your resale value more than any up front savings. I would not rebuild unless you are assured the head, valves and bottom end are all OK. That's more than a surface inspection. I would suggest calling around. There is a large difference in cost and these engines have many more different applications than auxilary power. Good luck. RD

Not possible.

Less expensive, maybe, but definitely not cheap. Is the $7k price for the same engine or a larger one? You could try to find a used one at a place like Sailorman, they have a web-site and an -800 number(http://www.sailorman.com/). I'd be interested to know if you were successful in finding used. If if if

Fred: I assume that you also want a 'f' model (fresh water cooled) too. While you are at it you could also upgrade to a 3gm. The 2gm and 3gm use the exact same motor mounts. The engine in about 4.5" longer, so IF you have the room in the engine compartment it would be a good time to upgrade too. I would have to assume that you should be able to find a good used engine in your area. I think that someone on the website was actually doing a 2gm to 3gm upgrade this year and would love to sell you their engine. I think he was asking $2500 for that motor. I would place a "wanted ad" on the site and see.

33 engine swap- 2 cyl to 3

I can assure you from personal experience that the Yanmar 3GM30F WILL fit very nicely into the engine compartment of the Hunter 33, having at this point almost completed the job. There are other projects going on around it so the swap is being completed in bits and pieces. The fit is perfect side to side, and the 3 cyl projects further forward to the point that I'm a little bit concerned it may interfere with the batteries. I'll work that out when I get that far. Pictures are being taken and an article is planned for the Photo Forum. My 2GM was in fact sold (at the asking price) via an ad placed at a site I believe was called boatdiesel.com. The buyer, from Connecticut, was replacing a 2QM which, if I remember, had a cracked head. It might be possible to combine the two to make one functioning engine. If it's of interest I can check to see if the fellow is interested. Used Yanmars are in shorter supply than hens teeth. I've only seen a few listed for sale and they were the older ones. (I got VERY lucky in happening across a nearly new 2GM3of at a very good price.)Universal and Beta marine both sell nice Kubota based diesels which are good replacements for the Yanmar at prices much lower than a new Yanmar. Any of them will fit nicely as they ALL were designed to fit in the space vacated by an Atomic 4 gas engine. Contact me if you are interested in the broken 2QM in CT. samlust@monhmouth.com

Two for sale

Fred: sorry for your plight. It's my worst nightmare. I noted two adds in the march 2000 issue of SPINSHEET magazine.(www.spinsheet.com) One is for a Yan.2QM20, 2cyl+trans,$2000 (obo)(215)745-0549. The other add is for a Yan.2 cyl. 2gm20, $2000,(obo)410-295-9246. I don't know if they're available or the true condition of either engine but it may be worth a look. Please let us know how you make out.
